Electrical short First of all, you had a short in the electric system that included your cigarette lighter. When you saw the spark, you saw the result of a short. What you are experiencing now is a bad ground in the system. This is what we refer to as stray voltage, which is why your lights are staying on. This is not aa fuse problem. If you haven't unplugged your cigarette lighter, do so. You are going to need the services of an automotive electrian to solve this problem. Is there no easy fix or cheap fix????

More labor intensive than anything. Tracing wires is no easy task but it can be done. In my honest opinion no this will not be an easy fix, but depending on who does the grunt work of tracing the wires and grounds you can help control the cost. Hope this gives you some direction. Thanks for Using FixYa!

Sincerely,

JC

check the fuse for the cigarette lighter and the clock is on the same circuit I think,do you know what caused the problem in the first place, check to see if there is a piece of something metallic(gum wrapper, etc)in the bottom of the cigarette lighter that could possibly cause a short.

Electrical problem Cadillac

If there is no power to the sockets, changing the bulb wont correct the problem. Check all fuses. Check for current to the tailight. Check for ground to the tailight. Repair as nesessary.
Check cigarette lighter filament. It may be faulty. Check inside cigarette lighter socket. It may have a foreign material in it causing the short.

The cigarett lighter outlets do not work.

Most likely you have something metallic that entered/fell inside one of the cigarette lighters.

I once found a dime inside a cigarette lighter which my children assured me was placed there by a shadowy personage named "Notme". Go figure.

While the fuse is REMOVED, look inside each lighter with a flashlight and remove the foreign material.

If you find nothing inside the lighters, disconnect them all from the electrical system by removing the single wire attached to the rear of the lighters. Replace the fuse.

Alternately, you can disconnect them one at a time, replacing the fuse after each one. You may need a few fuses for this.

If the fuse blows after ALL the lighters are disconnected, you have a wiring short circuit which is best diagnosed by a professional.

If the fuse does not blow, begin reconnecting the lighters until you see a spark, or the fuse blows again. This is the faulty lighter, replace it and your problem is solved.

Note: You cannot get shocked or electrocuted by your car's 12 Volt system but you can be burned by heavy sparking. You can reduce the risk of heavy sparking by using a lower-rated fuse during the testing. Wear saftey goggles and latex gloves for safety.

Good luck
