1998 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4 wheel drive

When I try to shift out of 4 wheel drive it takes a couple hundred yards to switch back to 2 wheel drive. When it does switch over it makes a noise and the vehicle shakes like you ran over a pothole. Any ideas on what it may be and if it would be an expensive repair.

I also have a 1998 jeep cherokee sport, i was having the same issues so i asked my uncle who is a mechanic.. he told me since the jeep automatically locks the hubs when you put it in 4 wheel drive, sometimes the hub locks get stuck trying to unlock, to solve this when you switch back to 2 wheel drive, reverse like 10 - 15 feet, the wheels spinning the opposite way help unlock the hubs, since i started doing this as soon as i reverse i feel the 4 wheel drive unengage and have not had a problem with it since, give it a try and see if that fixes your problem

Yes,,, check oil level... Also check the mount under the transmission tailshaft. If it is broken it will give you a thump when its loaded/unloaded. The shaking may be something else aggravated by the original problem. While under there, check all "u" joints and driveshaft slip joint.

How to switch 4 wheel drive back to 2 wheel drive in my 98 Jeep Grand Cherokee

that is because you have Part time 4wd? (what do you have)?
and must not drive on pavement free of ice.
its now winding up the drive train, bad for it too.

drive, to dirt, sand, gavel or grass and shift out of 4wd.
or jack up 1 tire, and same,
one tire must be on slippery surface. at least.

this happens on all PT 4wd
or using LOCK on AWD. dont.

Some vehicle have a spacefic routine you have to go threw to go from 4 to 2. Try it in neutral. or after you shift back into 2 drive in reverse for a bit till it pops back into 2.

Is this a manual 4 wheel drive system that can be shifted into 2 wheel drive? These type of systems should be in 2 wheel drive for tight turns. The drive train locks the differentials to make it 4 wheel drive and with the 4x4 engaged it creates this lunge grabbing effect.

How to shift a 1998 jeep grand cherokee into 4 wheel drive

Four low is almost never used. I use it on very steep rocky or muddy trails in the woods or to pull someone out of mud or a ditch. Though some will shift standing still it is best do do this while rolling. Four high can be shifted at low speeds of 2 to about 35mph (higher also but not really good idea) Low can only be shifted between 2 to 10mph. If you find yourself stuck and unable to shift because you aren't rolling you can also turn the engine off, engage the transfer case and re-start. That avoids having the gears clashing together. Best rule is if it begins to grind, don't force it.

Best way to shift from 2 hi into 4 hi or low is to have the vehicle completely stopped, in neutral, and then move the shifter lever. Any other way can damage your transfercase, which sounds like thats what you did. Trans shop.
