If it's a 3.1 liter V-6, the thermostat is located under the air intake where the water hose enters the intake manifold. That would be the driver's side or backside of the transversely mounted engine.

Need to locate and replace thermostat for 97 pontiac grand am se with a 2.4L engine.

The thermostat is under the car on the backside of the engine. there will be a metal pipe attached to the lower radiator hose. Follow that pipe to the back of the car. It is bolted to the water pump housing. The thermostat is in between the water pump housing and the metal pipe.

1999 grand am

'99 Grand Am have a plastic water outlet located on the back of the engine. (Same side as the battery). It is installed using a thin O-ring. Antifreeze is corrosive and weakens the O-ring causing a leak. Because of the location the leak can be almost undetectable. Replace the O-ring, but becareful not to break the water outlet.
