Question about 2000 Jeep Cherokee

Loud pulley noise coming from A/C unit?

There is a loud noise coming from the motor of my 2000 jeep cheroke sport. (4.0) Seems to be coming from the pulley attached to the A/C unit. Some noise from the unit itself as well. Shavings found at the base of the unit. Not effecting the engine preformance, but the pulley has ceized once causing alot of smoke. Turned it right off and restarted it later without it ceizing again. The noise still persists though. Should i replace the whole unit or should just the pulley be replaced? Is it a job for the shop or can it be done at home?

It sounds like the bearing is going bad in the pulley through chrysler i believe you have to replace the whole unit. to do this you will need to recover the freon from the system which makes it hard to do at home

2000 montero sport: There's a loud squealing noise coming from the engine. What could be wrong?

Squealing is most common with loose or worn belts, I would start by replacing the drive belt on the front of the motor and go from there, Its easier to troubleshoot a squealing motor if you know that the belt or belts are good.

2000 grand cheroke 4.0 knocks loud at idle

You need a trained technician to listen to this, but it sounds like a connecting rod and or a crankshaft main bearing noise. I lean more towards the rod knock form a worn out bearing.

This could posibly be the tensioner pulley. Oil the bearings and see if this helps.

A loud ticking noise?

No I would not chase to the pistons, these vehicle were very comon in creating HLA noise hydraulic lash adjusting valves, meaning the valves pump up with oil as the oil gets thinner they dont pump up as fast and create a very loud ticking noise, I would not express a great concern over simplicity, dodge was famous for this, they really were.

Loud squealing sound in my engine

Try removing the belt and turning each pulley by hand. If everything is smooth and free, with the belt still off, drive down the block once and see if the noise is there (this will eliminate all rotating accessories on the front). If you hear the noise, then there is a problem deeper inside. Oil pressure is good? Dont' forget when doing this, you will have no power steering, so be careful.

Loud pulley noise from A/C unit

For the price of a new pulley and bearing assy. and labor, it might be cost effective to get a remanufacterd unit and replace it yourself. When you tighten up the belt, don't overtighten.

if the compressor is not dammaged you can just replace the whole clutch assembly which comes with the a/c clutch coil, and bearings and the clutch plate i would suggest you to seek proffessional help on this one cause it needs special tools and equipment because of freon or r134 in the system!!!!
