Question about Ford Explorer

I have a 96 Explorer and I just tried to use my 4 wheel drive for the first time this year. Right away it seemed to drive "heavy" and eventually the 4WD and 4WDLOW light both started to flash... then go out. I tried to make a fairly tight turn and heard something rubbing (almost like my wheels rubbing my wheel wells) and then I couldn't move. I disengaged the four wheel drive and felt my truck settle (clunked and lowered) and then I could drive again. Thank goodness I was almost at a stop when this happened. What could be causing this?

When the lights flashed the system was telling u a fault has occured in the transfer case engagement actuator, most likely the motor or the mechanism it operates stuck, have you ever serviced the transfer case? I would do so, that will most likely cure the problem.

it is most likely an automatic awd, 4 hi is full time 4 wheel drive, 4 lo is full time 4 wheel drive but at a very low gear ratio and should not exceed 25 mph or could cause damage. and DO NOT shift into 4 lo while vehicle is in motion. Auto is a 2 wheel drive but automatically engages into 4 wheel drive under heavy acceleration.

Laod clunking in front end


I have a 96 ford explorer that has a clunking sound when I pull out slowly . If I engage 4 wheel drive the clunking stops. I have replace the ball joints and right front axil and ground the breaks. Can anyone give me a suggestion. Sounds as if something is binding.

I have the same problem with mine, I also had the same problem with a ford explorer, they told me it was the transfer case which has to do with the hubs. it jumps into 4 wheel drive then when you hit 2 wheel it stops.. Always had a problem with this in both of my SUV's.

1996 EXPLORER This TSB article is being republished in its entirety to include the 1995 4.6L Thunderbird/Cougar. ISSUE: After a 1-4 hour engine soak time, long crank times and/or long crank to start followed by a stall may occur on some vehicles. No further stalling or rough idle will occur after the engine is running. The long crank and/or stall may be due to the Idle Air Control (IAC) Valve sticking.
ACTION: Replace the IAC Valve with a revised IAC Valve if no Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) are present. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
  1. Perform normal diagnostics and correct any DTCs as required by referring to the appropriate year Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) Service Manual.
  2. If no codes are present, replace the IAC Valve by referring to the appropriate model/year Service Manual, Section 03-14. Refer to the following Idle Air Control Valve Application Chart for proper IAC usage.

I have turned the 4 wheel drive on and don't know how to turn it off.


You may also have burnt out a fuse. Check your owners manual or possibly the cover of the fuse box and find out which one is related to the brake system, brake fuse, brake switch something like that.

If the fuse is good, then you should be in Neutral with brakes applied to change out of 4x4 low to 4x4 high or 2-wheel drive. Neutral is standard for most vehicles, some you must be in Park. This information is also in owners manual under "Driving" or "Off-roading"
