Question about 1999 Lincoln Town Car
I'VE HAD ONE DEALER TELL ME THAT I NEED TO REPLACE THE SHOCKS AND ONE TELL ME I DIDN'T. IT STARTED WITH THE FACT THAT WHILE THE CAR IS OFF YOU CAN ACTUALLY HEAR SOME TYPE OF COMPRESSOR TYPE NOISE - IT STILL RIDES OK BUT THE NOISE DIDN'T USE TO HAPPEN THAT WAY AND IT DOES SEMM TO SIT LOWER.
The compressor running indicates that the suspension does have air leak, now the leak could be from any where in the air suspension such as the shocks, the hoses, and or the front strutsor at the sensors so as long as you hear the compressor running quite often yo definately have a leak and it needs to be checked out using a hoist to lift the vehicle

Think about it
there's not much gas in a shock absorber. If that sound was from the shock leaking, it would not do it for yery long before it was completely empty.
The sound you hear is probably the A/C compressor leaking refridgerant back to the tank as it changes state, which is normal.
Wait until the sound has gone comletely away, turn off any A/C function, that means no defroster, nothing. Start the car, let it run shut it off, listen.
Notice that I didn't have you drive the car. If it still makes a noise, you did not move the car so there was no movement to the shocks at all. At that point it is engine related.
I think you can table the shock issue, unless you bounce more than once when you hit a bump.
factory shocks do not determine ride height. The springs do that.
