most likely needs an encoder motor. That is the fancy term for the motor that switches the t_case through the gears. The flashing lights indicate a code had been stored and you should have gotten it serviced then before further damage. as long as you dont drive it in 4 wheel you should still be ok

SOURCE: electric 4WD selector switch on dash does not select/deselect 4WD. I wish to manually shift the selector at the gearbox if this is possible.

by swapping vaccum hoses on front diff shift on fly unit you can get out of 4wd or vise versa or by removing and sliding sleeve ring inside diff tube over, check range selection detent switch on this unit it is a on/off switch.these fail often

Electronic Shift On the Fly (ESOF) Operation
The ESOF system is an electronic shift 4x4 system that allows the operator to choose between two different 4x4 modes as well as 2-wheel drive. The operator can switch between 2WD and 4WD HIGH mode at speed. To engage or disengage LOW Range, the vehicle speed must be less than 5 kph, the brake depressed, and the transmission must be in NEUTRAL.

The transfer case is equipped with an electromagnetic clutch which is located inside the case. This clutch is used to spin up the front drive-line when shifting from 2WD to 4x4 High mode at speed. When the control switch on the instrument panel is turned, the generic electronic module (GEM) recognizes that a shift has been requested and activates the electromagnetic clutch and the relays which power the transfer case shift motor. When the shift motor reaches the desired position as determined by the contact plate position inputs to the GEM, power to the shift relays and motors will be removed. When the transfer case front and rear output shafts are synchronized, the spring loaded lockup collar mechanically engages the main-shaft hub to the drive sprocket. Finally, the front axle collar is engaged and the electromagnetic clutch is deactivated.

Shift Between 2WD and 4x4 HIGH:
Shifts between 2WD and 4x4 HIGH can be made at speed. Listed below are the inputs and outputs needed by the GEM to execute a change between any of these modes.

Feature Inputs:
*4WD Mode Switch (Various resistances).
*Contact Plate Position Inputs A, B, C, D (grounded when closed, open circuit when open).

Feature Outputs:
*4x4 Shift Motor Relay Outputs
*Transfer Case Clutch Relay (grounded when relay is on, open circuit when relay is off).
*4x2/4x4 Vacuum Solenoid (grounded when activated, open circuit when deactivated).
*Cluster Indicators (ground when activated, open circuit when deactivated).

Shifting Into/Out of 4WD LOW:
When shifting into or out of 4WD LOW, the GEM requires that the vehicle speed be less than 5 kph, the brake is applied, and the transmission is in NEUTRAL.

Feature Inputs:
*4WD Mode Switch (Various resistances).
*Contact Plate Position Inputs A, B, C, D (grounded when closed, open circuit when open).
*VSS Sensor (Sinusoid Signal: 0.7V-20V, 2.2 Hz/mph).

4WD Mode Switch
A rotary switch allows the vehicle operator to choose between 2WD, 4WD HIGH, and 4WD LOW modes of 4x4 operation.

GEM Module
The Generic Electronic Module (GEM) controls the operation of the 4x4 system

Vehicle Speed Sensor
The vehicle speed sensor (VSS), mounted in the rear of the transfer case, informs the GEM of the vehicle speed.

Transfer Case Shift Motor Sense Plates

The shift motor sense plate, an integral part of the electric shift motor, informs the GEM to the positions of the transfer case

Transmission Range Sensor
Located on the left side of the transmission, this sensor informs the GEM when the transmission is in the NEUTRAL position.

Electric Shift Motor
The electric shift motor, mounted externally at the rear of the transfer case, drives a rotary cam which moves the mode fork and range fork within the transfer case to select between the 2WD, 4WD HIGH, and 4WD LOW positions.

4x4/4x2 Vacuum Solenoids
These two solenoids are attached to the upper RH side of the engine compartment dash, and alternately route vacuum to the vacuum motor which engages/disengages the center axle disconnect collar in the front axle assembly.

4x4 Shift Motor Relay
A module containing two relays which under the control of the GEM, shift the transfer case shift motor between the 2WD, 4WD HIGH, and 4WD LOW modes.

Transfer Case Clutch Relay
An electromechanical relay is used to activate the transfer case clutch within the transfer case.

Good luck and hope this helps,but start with the simple and check the fuses and wire harness. Both white/light blue stripe wires should have 12V in run. The GEM will ground the left side (closest to engine) solenoid to disengage the front axle. It will ground the the right side solenoid (closest to fender) to engage the front axle. If the GEM doesn't see Neutral it will not let the truck come out of 4Lo. If the GEM had water leaking on it it may well be the root of the problem. The shift motor only has power when the GEM sends it a signal to move the shift lever. Once the shift is completed the motor shuts off. There are 2 wires that control the shift motor. A yellow and an orange. The GEM alternates between 12v and Ground to these wires to control which way the motor turns. The GEM uses the transfer case shift relay module to control the power to the motor. There are contact plates inside the shift motor assembly that indicate the position that the shift lever is in. This is what the GEM used to know what the T-case is doing. Any one of these components can fail.

If the light shows that you are in 4L or 4H it is most likely the TLA or thermal electric actuator. They are heated electrically to cause a pin to eject about an inch to push a fork in the front diff to connect the right and left axles, thereby giving you 4wd. When the TLA doesn't work, your front axle won't engage and 4wd won't work. They are prone to not work in cold conditions as they are thermally actuated. Another possibility is a blown fuse, in my 97 GMC it is #24 in the panel and it is 25 amps. If the fuse is blown the actuator won't work.
If this doen't work I have other suggestions for it not working.

I have a 93 jeep Cherokee, it will move in 4wh and in 4wl but will not go back into 2wd?

try posting what 4wd system you have,? first.
command trac or select track, (the latter is full time)
part time or the full time system,
we cant guess it....
read the operators guide first, if a part time system only
as i suspect, stop driving on dry pavement.
it's only for ice, or dirt. part time. part time is not a full time system.
Command-Trac
shifting to 4wd on dry (means no ice) pavement causes, drive line wind up! and the gears to lockup. (see steering get tight in turns?> and is dangerous to drive it like this , you, me and the box)

operating vehicle at slow speed. If vehicle shifts into 2WD, axle will
ratchet. If shift is not completed, transfer case will shift into 4WD
and hissing sound will come from mode select switch.

Transfer case will not shift out of 4wd into 2wd


old post but , others can learn PT 4WD.

that is a transfer case issue.

can be caused, by using 4wd on dry pavement and the damage caused.

that is, the correct action, jack up the front end of car.

then shift to 2wd and leave it there, until l offoard or on ice.

I have a 2004 jeep grand cherekee it starts up and drive but about 10-15 mins later the trans will shift it self into neutral basically and wont move but once it sits for a a day or so it will start...


if it's 4WD it may be ABS sensors. If the computer sees either the front wheels going faster than the rear or vice verse it engages the transfer case. If it still sees the condition it will shift the trans into neutral. Probably one of the sensors on the front.

Can i change from a 4 wheel transmission to a 2 wheel transmission


without changing transfer case it is not possible.* (normal circumstances)

what you need is NP242 or NP231 selectrac /command trac transfer cases from 4.0 G.cherokee or Cherokee. those allows you to select 2wd for all time driving and let you decide on mode when 4wd is needed.

also you can test to see how it feels by removing front shaft for trial purposes but you will be loosing power because all time transfer case distributes the traction over front and rear.( do not try this when driving in traffic)

*I also heard that it is possible to convert all time mode to all time 2wd but keeping 4wd low intact.( i wonder how realiable the result is though)

94 explorer, manual trans. last night while driving, 4x4 and low range lights flash on then off. when I shifted into 5th getting on freeway, lose all drive power as if clutch suddenly went out. 4x4 light...


It sounds like the bearings inside the transfer case are going out, with pressure on it while accelerating its fine, then when you push in the clutch the transfer case gets slack allowing the internal parts to move, causing the lights to flash as gears move causing the shift motor to move. I would start looking for a replacement transfer case.

How to disengage all wheel drive to two wheel drive


if your awd or 4wd shift lever has the option for 2wd than put the trans in nuetral at a complete stop and put the shift lever for the transfer case in 2wd if there is no option for this selection than the only way is a labor intensive transfer case swap to a np 231 and it will be a couple of modifications to allow this to work. i hope this helps

99 jeep grand cherokee limited, have no 4wd. fluid was empty when i got truck filled case, still no 4wd. 242 quad trac. put vehicle on lift shifted into drive rear wheels only engage. any ideas?


If it was ever towed with the wheels on the ground (not dollied) then the transfer case is probably "burned out" and you will need to replace it. These models of jeeps are full time 4WD and MUST be dollied or towed on a carrier or rollback type truck. Unless they have manual locking hubs.

2-Speed Torque-On-Demand (TOD) Operation
The automatic 4-wheel drive (A4WD) system is a 2-speed torque-on-demand (TOD) operation that utilizes the following components:
  • Transfer case
  • 4-wheel drive (4WD) control module (integral to the powertrain control module [PCM])
  • Mode select switch (MSS)
  • Gearmotor encoder assembly (part of the transfer case shift motor)
  • Transfer case shift motor
  • Shift motor sense plate (part of the gearmotor encoder assembly)
Principles of Operation
Transfer Case Shift Motor The externally mounted transfer case shift motor, located at the rear of the transfer case, turns the shift cam assembly. As the shift cam assembly turns, it positions the reduction shift fork for desired transfer case operation. An integral position sensor in the shift motor provides shift motor position information to the 4WD control module.
Mode Select Switch (MSS) The push button MSS, mounted on the instrument panel, allows the operator to select the 4x4 Auto, 4x4 High, and 4x4 Low transfer case operating modes. The indicator light, on the instrument cluster push button, will illuminate only when the 4x4 Low position is engaged.

  1. If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step.
  1. If the concern is not visually evident, connect the diagnostic tool to the data link connector and select the vehicle to be tested from the diagnostic tool menu. If the diagnostic tool does not communicate with the vehicle:
    • check that the program card is correctly installed.
    • check the connections to the vehicle.
    • check the ignition switch position.
  1. If the diagnostic tool still does not communicate with the vehicle, refer to the diagnostic tool operating manual.
  1. Carry out the diagnostic tool data link test. If the diagnostic tool responds with:
    • CAN circuit fault; all electronic control units no response/not equipped, refer to Section 418-00 .

while moving about 2-5 mph, shift your transmission into neutral but keep the vehicle rolling, then move the transfer case shift from 4HI to 2HI.
