Question about 1997 GMC Jimmy

ABS light comes on 97 Jimmy

When The Abs light comes on The speedometer dosen't work and I lose power. It's like I'm stuck in neutral. Then it suddenly kicks in And the Jimmy starts taking off. This happens after I've been driving for half an hour. I took it in for repairs, and the mechanic did the computer test and said everything was ok, but the light still came on and went in neutral. It's been in the shop for almost 3 weeks. Said I might have to buy chip that cost $1800. Does this sound right? I know nothing about cars. Also is the Airbag light suppose to be on?

In regard to the speed sensor, the mechanic checked it twice and light still comes on. So,he's going to try to reboot the computer, and check the relay wires. I appreciate all your help and I'll let you know how this turns out. Aloha

The exact same thin happened to me at 11:30PM on Christmas eve, but I found that the speedo did not work, then the ABS light came on, and the Jimmy would not come out of First gear, although it did go into reverse as well. My Jimmy is a 1998 SLS 4X4, 4Dr. Thru some web research, it appears to be the vehicle speed sensor, which on my vehicle is located on the transfer case. I plan on replacing it this week. (Around 105.00 from Napa) I will let you know if it works!

The Airbag and ABS are separate systems and un-related, the speedo is related to the ABS light, I think if you run a self test on the system computer there will be a trouble code for the transmission speed sensor, the output of this sensor is used by the ABS and the speedometer. The airbag is most likely a defective rotating contact under the steering wheel, we techs call it a clock-spring contact because of it's shape, it allows the connection from the steering column to the airbag. CAUTION! If you want to change out this contact the steering wheel needs to be pulled, follow factory recommendations on dis-arming the airbag, it can be very dangerous if you don't.

I never said the sensor was the issue, I said check the output, that means wiring, computer connectors the whole nine yards, codes etc.

Also you never said the technician checked the sensor (WHAT DOES CHECKED MEAN, DID HE SEE IF THE SIGNAL REACHES THE DASH AND THE COMPUTER??), I gave you the things I would start checking if the truck was in my shop, an honestly I dont' know why the THANKS FOR TRYING.

My ABS and Brake light goes on alot. Also sometimes my gages will go up and down for no reason. That is what they call the GM shuffel. It happens to alot of GM vehicles.
I never had a problem with loosing power or the tranny stuck in second gear. Sounds electrical, if no one can help here, get that thing to a garage before your hurt.

97 nissan 2 4 speedometer cable

Sounds as if it is a cable or the speedo sensor. If there is ABS it could also be the ABS sensor playing up on one of the wheels.
Best advice is take it to a diagnostic place or find a local mobile diagnostic mechanic where they can tell you why the light is coming on the desk.. This may be a cheaper way as they may be able to tell you the exact part which is showing the fault.

I put a new hud assembly on my 98 bravoda now it wont shift the speedometer keeps messing up and the abs light is on dose anyone no what is going on

The Bravada AWD system works with imput from the ABS wheel sensors. Sounds like the sensor in the hub you replaced isn't sending a proper signal. You must correct this for the system to work right. Check to see if the ABS connector is fully engaged, and check the wire to make sure it isn't cut.
If any thing dosen't appear wrong, it may be the sensor that's failed.

2002 F250 4x2 SC - abs light comes on momentarily under hard acceleration, speedometer drops down at same time then pegs back up to normal speed. Coincides with tranny downshift. No loss of power, no wheel...

I bet you also lose the function of your cruise control when it happens. I would start first with checking the wiring connection on the vehicle speed sensor (also acts as abs sensor). Remove the sensor, clean it up and reinstall. If that doesn't work, replace the VSS.

You will find it on the top of your rear differential.

Side note: If you ever get stuck in the mud/snow and have to rock the truck forward/reverse, sometimes that will trigger your ABS light as well. This will normally reset itself after a few on/off cycles of the engine.

ABS and TC light on, speedometer and odometer not working

I have the 2000 Cadillac Catera Sport and I had the same problem. ABS, TC light and no speedometer and odo. I thought it was an electrical problem however I solved the problem by refurbishing the ABS Module. If you bring to the dealer it will cost you $3,000. You can have your ABS module rebuilt try they do it for about $200 I believe. I got mine fixed because a friend of mine removed them and soldered some loose connectors together. All it cost me was a case of beer! It worked for my car just a suggestion for you guys. My ABS Module was a Bosch 5.3. Hope this helps!
