How do you change the dust covers on the rear brakes of a 1999 Silverado Z71?

You need to remove the axle shafts. Remove the differential cover, pinion shaft and c-locks. Then you can unbolt the backing plates and transfer the park brakes.

1999 Z71 will not shift out of Park sometimes. Have to play with the brake pedal for shifter to release. ????

There are two things that could be going on if while "Playing with the brake pedel" it will eventurally release.

The 99 Z71 has an electrically controlled park lock accuator that releases when you put your foot on the brake. It is an electromatic maganetic slide that releases the shift lever out of park.

1) There could be a problem with the brake switch itself,

2) It could be the accuator in the shifter has become weak and no longer wants to pull out.

It is more likely #2, and that one is harder to replace. I would try a new brake switch first, and if it does not work, take it back and trade it for the lock accuator.

Hope this give you an idea where to go.

I suspect the mechanism that prevents shifting from Park until the brake is depressed has malfunctioned.

1998 chevy 1500k truck will not shift out of park when it does it drives and shifts fine.

Check brake light switch. When brake pedal is pushed to take shift lever out of park, switch sends current to a magnetic lock on steering column to release from park.
I have a 97 Z71 that had the same problem. I put on a new brake light switch and it took care of my problem.
