The passat takes more than 5Qt of oil. Please check manual..it is more likely close to 6 qts of oil. Also replace oil at 3k. Sludge is also a common problem in this vehicles. Changing the oil at early schedules it will reduce any changes of blown engine...$18.00 cost, if you do it yourself..vs $ 5 to 10 k to replace the engine...Also this type of engines use oil at a rapid pace..check it every 500 to 1000 miles, pending on your driving needs. You will see a need to add a quart of oil, due to the sludge issue..

Just like any other car.

Drain the oil from the oil pan.
remove the filter
put a new filter on
replace the drain plug (very important)
Put in 5qts of oil

2006 VW PASSAT. TRYING TO CHANGE OIL CAN'T FIND FILTER AND CAN'T FIGURE OUT HOW TO REMOVE OVERHEAD ENGINE COVER

The engine cover just pulls off the clips so no problem their the oil filter is inside a plastic housing at the front of the engine rightish side and it has a 32mm or 28 mm head on the top of the plastic housing as its a cartridge type oil filter not a screw on type that you are accustomed too.

Transmission slams hard when down shifting. rattles car. 2007 vw passat. 2.0 turbo automatic

Need more clarification when driving and park. Happen to vw a lot with no solution. Could be electrical ( Tcm + Wiring conector, ECM) ( fluid change fluid+filter add lucid tray oil) or mechanical. Rattle could be engine or evap thing located under or next to air filter. Alternator also. The engine you speak of is know for sludge build up problems by VW. They've even made recalls base on what I've heard. Check oil circulation and how to fix oil circulation problem. Drop the the oil pan and clean filter screen where it sucks in oil. Other things related need to be unclog..

Passat 2006 2.0 tdi 140 engine won't start dash warning says either "engine fault, garage" or "low oil pressure".

Exhaust pressure sensor a possibility if it has a DPF (diesel particulate filter). Has it had its fuel pump recall, the oil pressure light could be just the constant cranking and running the battery low.

1998 volkswagon passat engine lifter rattle

Cause is lack of oil not getting to lifters. Try using a good cleaner to flush the engine and change to a lighter oil for a couple oil changes.
