Question about 1996 Pontiac Grand Am

1 Answer

Engine light flashes when going up hill.

I have a 96 grand am. When I am going up a hill the engine light starts to flash, but when back on level ground the light stops. The spark plugs and wires were changed, and rechecked. They seem ok. The car also lacks power when going up hill.

Sometimes when you are going up hill your check engine light or your oil light will come on because all of the oil is at the back of your oil pan.

Why won't 96 grand am start ate being wrecked?

You will have to determine if the vehicle has spark as well as fuel pressure. Pull a plug wire off and ground it over the engine. Crank the engine and it should spark. If spark is ok, you will most likely have a fuel supply issue. You will need to hook a fuel pressure gauge to the fuel rail test port to determine if pressure is available. If no pressure suspect a fuel pump or power/ground supply issue to it

Check engine light

A flashing check engine light means that your vehicle is having a catalytic converter damaging misfire ! Spark plug problem , coil , ignition module , injector breaking down electrically un a load .
They need to hook up a scope an check it .

96 Chevy Suburban going up hill the battery light starts flashing and the battery gauge drops. As soon as you level off it all goes back to normal. Have already changed battery, alternator and a wire

Wow, thats pretty weird.
The only thing that comes to mind is a bad connection in the harness somewhere that would be affected by engine torque.
Can you make it happen if you power-brake the engine ?

I have a 96 grand cherokee.when i come to a stop it stalls and as i hit the gas to resume driving it studders and struggles to pick up speed

Are you check injection system? Some check engine light there; try read fault codes stored on ECU under this procedure...

Without starting the engine, turn the ignition key on, off, on, off, and back to on.

The "CHECK ENGINE" light will flash the first digit, pause and then flash the second digit of any stored error.

Example:one flash and pause and eight flashes = number 18 error code.

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I`ll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

I have a 1999 grand marguis and the engine light is blanking i just replace the intake manifold and the alternater and the battery is new everything good except for the fact that the car runs ruff it...

If the engine light is flashing then it has a severe misfire, have the engine light scanned and it will tell you which is the misfiring cylinder/s. I would advise you to replace the spark plugs also

Where can find the plug to get cheek compuetr in grand cherokee 94

1994 is before OBD II, so it won't have the plug your thinking of. Here is the procedure to get the trouble code(s) if the check engine light is on. MIL is the check engine light.

MIL Method

This procedure may be used on 1991-96 models.
  1. Start the engine, if possible, cycle the transmission selector and the A/C switch if applicable. Shut off the engine.
  2. Turn the ignition switch ON-OFF, ON-OFF, ON-OFF, ON within 5 seconds.
  3. Observe the MIL on the instrument panel.
  4. Just after the last ON cycle, MIL will begin flashing the stored codes.
  5. The codes are transmitted as two digit flashes. For example Code 21 will be displayed as a FLASH FLASH pause FLASH.
  6. Be ready to write down the codes as they appear; the only way to repeat the codes is to start over at the beginning.

ENGINE MISFIRE TO THE POINT, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON. AN IT WILL START TO FLASH. AN WONT GO OUT UNTIL YOU TURN OFF THE CAR .60-65 IT WILL STOP, AS SOON AS THE CAR START TO SLOW DOWN.IT START ALL...

wait untill its dark outside, open your hood and start the engine. look around for white / blue or yellow flashes of light coming from your plug wires. most of the time the spark plug wires are worn out / degraded from heat , and you can see the small lightning flashes in the dark. if you see no light flashes ( shorts to ground) then you can have a cracked / faulty distributor , or bad spark plugs.
