Question about 1997 Jeep Cherokee Country

1998 Jeep Cherokee Sport wont start

My son's 1998 Jepp Cherokee Sport recently started having a problem. It wont start. The dash lights up so there seems to be power but no clicking or any engine response at all. We tried putting it in Neutral and starting it that way still nothing and I mean nothing. No click like you usually get when the starter is bad. He checked the connections to the starter they all look clean and new. Any suggestions?

    Howardepgco,

Thank you for the advise...tried that. it works...accompanied by a high pitched whine. Was thinking could possibly be the solonoid attached to the starter? Any other suggestions are appreciated.

Try this first. With one of you under the car whack the starter with a hammer as the other of you turns the key t the start position and holds it there. No wimpy whacks here give it one or two good ones. If it is a bad starter it may start this way. If it does, a new starter motor is in your future. Very easy to change on a Jeep. If it doesn't work let me know and we will go further.

I bet the nose bushing is worn causing the pinion gear two grind into the flywheel. You need a new starter I am guessing.Like I say they are easy to change on a Jeep. Just make sure you disconnect and isolate the negative battery terminal before you start any work.

I drove the Jeep home with no problems. This morning, it won't start -- no power at all, no radio, light, power lock, power window ... nothing works but I keep on hearing a fast "tick, tick, tick" sound...

Your battery is low or has weak cell. I recommend jump starting vehicle. If it jump starts then replace the battery. If
battery warning light is illuminated on dash may have charging
system concern.

Sounds like your battery is way down. have it checked/charged and load tested. then have the charging system tested after you get it started.

Interior Dome light will not go out

The problem was in the dome light itself. It is being replaced. The problem could have been caused by my son tucking and stapling a detached headliner around the dome light resulting in a ground problem that also shorted out other electrical systems. The exact cause is unknown.

Tail lights not working

Sounds like a bad headlight switch. Pull one from a donor vehicle (junk yard) to replace yours.

1998 Jeep Cherokee Sport Ignition Lights Come on but wont crank

Try putting the car in neutral and starting. If its a manual trans it might be the clutch pedal safety switch or it may be something as simple as a loose battery connection.
