I have a 1993 chevy heavy half ton. Has the 4l60e and the gm 9.5" 14 bolt rear end. I have been fighting a harsh shift problem, it shifts harsh from park to drive/reverse and also from 1st to 2nd if you are gentle on the gas. When mashing the throttle coming off a stop light it shifts to 2nd much easier and less harsh. here is a list of what's been replaced: tps,all shift solenoids,fuel filter. Anything helps. I'm almost positive the noise is coming from the rearend. Should also note that when truck is in park I can push on the truck and move it front to back about a 1/4" - 3/8" please help!

I wonder if the ring and pinon has to much back lash, Do u have any movement in the u joints?

    Were looking into the u joints and I will also be pulling the diff cover to look for the obvious, metal shavings, missing teeth etc. What we have discovered, is that while brake is applied and shifting from park to reverse to drive and back to reverse , the driveline rotates about 20 degrees each time we shift it around. This leads me to look more at the u joints. Every time we shifted the rear wheels wanted to jump, as in take off. Could this really mean look at the differential more than the u joints?

  • Anonymous Jun 16, 2012

    I was told that the backlash being off would be noticeable by pulling off the diff cover and inspecting the ring gear for obvious wear on the edges of the gear teeth.

  • Anonymous Jun 18, 2012

    It is something to do with the differential. The pinion gear has too much play, before it makes contact with the ring gear. Ideas?

  • Anonymous Jun 20, 2012

    It's the backlash. Fixing it tomorrow with a new pinion crush sleeve and differential shims.

SOURCE: 95 GMC Jimmy 4L60E no 2nd or OD 4L60E

You might want to try this if its got a kick down cable unhook it from throutle body and pull it out as far as you can and let it snap back, do this a few of times, sometimes a valve gets hung up inside valve body of trans. and won't let it shift. If that don't help you may have to pull pan to dislodge it if thats the problem. chk. the plug on trans. (Its a 4 wire white plug) with test light with key on to see if there is power down there one will be hot, thats for overdrive, now on top of intake in front throutle body there is a sending unit that looks like a temp. sending unit with a 2 wire plug on it that sends a signial down to that plug when engine gets to temp. to let it shift to overdrive. Maybe this will help, or give you some ideas.

Sounds like you have a bad shift solenoid. Not sure if the Chevys are a solenoid pack, or seperate, but it will need to be replaced.

4l60e 1995 gmc k1500 transmission seems to shift fine but when shifting voltage drops to around 10 then back to 14 after shift.

Make sure your body to engine ground is good. If you can't find it add a flat flexible battery strap to a bolt on the frame and the other end to a bolt on the engine.

I have a 1993 GMC Sierra 4x4, with a 350 motor, a 4L60E transmission with a 3/4 ton upgrade and shift kit as well. Now when i press on the accelerator it falls on its face and then picks back up. ...

I would check the engine timing and do a check on the exhaust to be sure it is not partially blocked. As to the snapping when you shift I would check the universal joint to be sure it is ok and the rear end may have some play in it.

4L60E won't shift to 3rd on 1993 Chevy Blazer

Hello;
It sounds as though your trans is going out. How is reverse? If reverse is real strong then you may just have a solenoid going out. Drop the pan and change the oil and filter if you are comfortable doing that. Inspect the pan for metal shavings and contaminents. Otherwise it would need to go to a shop for repair.
Thanks;
