Question about 1985 Jeep CJ7

1 Answer

Wipers, heat, and turn signals only work when I jiggle the key

I have a '90 Jeep Wrangler. Recently the turn signals went out all the way around. Soon after the wipers too. Then the motor won't come on to blow heat. Last night I put pressure on the key while it was in the ignition and when I hit a certain spot everything works as long as I hold the key there. Brake, tail, and head lights work fine.

Sounds like a short in the electrical system. Maybe even just a loose ground wire. On the other hand...It could just as easily be a bad ECM (BRAIN)! Warranty still in tact? I hope so. Diagnostic at a certified Jeep shop... Good Luck!

Jeep has power but as soon as I turn key I hear a click and loose all power. If I jiggle battery cables I get power back but loose it again as soon as I turn key in ignition. Is this a ground problem?

This is a connection problem at the battery more than likely. You need to remove the cable terminals ( they are made of lead) one at a time & really clean the corrosion, from them, coat them with grease or vaseline inside & out & reinstall securely after doing the same to the battery post. Your Jeep is a 90 model so you may need to consider replacing both the Pos. & Neg cables to get new terminals that will securely mount to a well cleaned, undamaged battery. Years of current running through the large cables causes the same corrosion you see on the terminals to build up on the insides of the cables from the battery to the starter & sometimes from the ground terminal to the ground connections. You are describing classic, loss of contact symptom. You should check the connection at the end of the cables & clean as well.

2008 should be under warranty, take it back to dealer.

With all of the electronics on vehicles today, seems like these sort of system failures are becoming commonplace.
