When you turn the key to the run position (without starting the engine) you should be able to hear the fuel pump run for a few seconds. You might need to have someone listen by the gas tank since the pump is located in the tank. If you don't hear the pump then there could be a bad ground or else either the fuel pump relay or fuel pump is bad.

The wiring harness for the fuel pump (and sending unit) comes out through the top of the gas tank and typically connects to another plug that is located somewhere between the tank and bottom side of the body near the right or left rocker panel. I am not familiar with your specific vehicle but there is usually a ground wire that connects from the plug to the frame. The plug may also need to be inspected and cleaned if it is corroded or dirty.

If you are not hearing the fuel pump run then another thing to try is to bang on the tank with your hand with ignition switch in the on position. I had this problem with my Bonneville. The car would stall and not hold fuel pressure. When I turned the key the fuel pump would not energize but if I wrapped on the gas tank then the pump would run. In this case the pump was bad so I replaced it.

    I hope I have helped.

Check all things airflow related. The PCV valve, the air cleaner, the mass airflow sensor and any other filters.

I suspect that your fuel system is faulty. Check for a clogged fuel filter, or if your fuel pump don't run at all, replace the "fuel pump relay". Fuel pump may be faulty. Sometimes your fuel pump will run, but be too weak to hold pressure, which will let your car idle somewhat, but be too weak to run the engine at speed or under load.

Fuel filter replacement 7.3 liter diesel

I'm not too uppety-up on diesels but I have changed a few. My description is pretty basic.
BEFORE doing anything, make sure you have at least a quart (or more) of FRESH CLEAN diesel in separate container.
Locating the filter is usually in site when opening hood and fairly easy to get to. The ones I've done, look simular to a spin on oil filter. Usually there is a valve on the bottom to drain fuel and/or water out out of the filter.
First, drain fuel out of filter, may need a hose and a catch pan so is not to make too much of a mess.
Second, spin old filter off.
Third, take your fresh clean diesel and pour it in the new filter up to being full but not running over, make sure you wet the o-ring with clean diesel also.
Fourth, spin new filter in place.
Fifth, turn ignition key to on for at least 10 seconds or more, NOT starting the engine. You should hear a pulsing sound, that's the pump priming the new filter, can't have any trapped air in system. If there is too much trapped air the engined will not start or stay running. This has worked for me quite a few times but if you want more information go to http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/index.php and put your question in the search box in the forums section. Hope this helps.

My car wont stay started when im trying to crank the engine?

If it turns over and almost seems to start I would inspect the timing belt by removing the top cover. It may need to be replaced due to damage or from becoming stretched and/or loose. Next I would check the fuel pump/fuel pump relay. If it will run for a few seconds then sputter and die, try replacing the fuel filter.

Hello ,your fuel pump is losing its prime and running back into the tank. Two things could be wrong either a bad fuel pressure regulator or the fuel pump itself:)

Fuel pump not staying on 1993 k1500 350

Some GM products also incorporate the oil sender switch into that circuit for fuel pump, so that in case of an accident, engine shuts off, oil pressure drops, in turn, shuts off power to fuel pump. May be worth a look at what your getting for oil pressure, as well as checking switch/sender.

2001 cavalier barely starts, sometimes runs for a few seconds, then dies. i already changed fuel filter, pump relay, new plugs also. i can hear fuel pump come on for a few seconds, when turning on the key....

Three things.
First, you need to check the MAF sensor for contamination.

Second, check fuel pressure, if you dont have a gauge, autozone and Advance have them on their tool loaner program.
Should see 35-40 psi with key on engine off, cycle key a few times, if it takes a while to build up, replace filter and retest.

Third, possible convertor blockage, easiest check is to remove the 02 sensor and try to start with the hole open, if it runs, then that is it, specs allow for 2-3 lbs of back pressure max. That means if you can hear pressure escaping, it is a problem area.
