Question about 2006 Hyundai Sonata

1 Answer

I have a 2004 Sonnata 6cyl. This morning I went to start it up and the engine made a loud knocking noise and the engine light came on. Could this be from low oil?

More of a loud knock initially when I first started it, I backed out and started to drive about 20 yards and the car felt like it wanted to stall out.

  • dbour3501 Dec 01, 2008

No, just felt like it wanted to stall, the knocking stayed pretty constant.

  • dbour3501 Dec 01, 2008

    Not lately, no.

I am now wondering if my timing belt is bad. The knocking went away right away but when I try to drive it the car feels like it can get any power and it sounds like it is missing or only running on 3 cylinders instead of 6

and have you checked the oil at all? if so was it at the right level?

  • syke904 May 11, 2010

did it continue to make the noise as you drove it. like did the noise get louder as you pressed the acceleration pedal harder?

  • syke904 May 11, 2010

is it an actual knocking sound or more like a pinging sound

Ok did the knocking noise speed up as you pressed the pedal? if so id check the oil first and see if that helps at all and if it continues to make the knockin sound you might have a thrown rod/piston. The oil can effect the the pistons being as it is the lubricant for the pistons to move up and down in the bores(cylinders) but the low oil would only cause the engine to start knocking if there hasnt been any oil added as needed for a long while. has you engine got hot or warmer than usual? the could also be a symptom of low oil.

well id start by checking the spark plugs and the plug wires. if you havent changed them in a while its a easy and cheap way to go first. you always wanna start with the cheaper things first and then work you way up to the expsensive.

Smoke on start? Could be a valve problem where all your oil is in the bottom at start? Belts are squeaking too? Maybe a tensioner went bad?

Saw this service bulletin---

TAPPING / KNOCKING NOISE FROM ENGINE AT COLD START
This bulletin amends ITB02-049. This version amends the Applied Vehicles.
Please discard all paper copies of the earlier version.
APPLIED VEHICLE: 2002 - 2004 Q45 (F50)
2003 - 2004 M45 (Y34)
2003 - 2004 FX45 (S50) with V8 engine.
IF YOU CONFIRM:
A tapping or knocking noise (similar to a piston or valvetrain noise) when starting a cold engine,
NOTE: The engine is considered “cold” when it has been OFF (not running) for several hours.
ACTIONS:
1. Dislodge and remove any carbon deposits that may have caused the noise and confirm that carbon
deposits were the cause of the noise.
• While the noise is occurring, quickly rev the engine several times to approximately 4,000 RPM. Then
release the accelerator quickly, as soon as the engine reaches 4,000 RPM.
• The noise should disappear immediately if carbon deposits are the cause.
NOTE:
• If the customer reported a noise that exactly matches the symptoms listed above, but you cannot
duplicate it, the cause may still be carbon deposits. Go to step 2.
• If the noise does not stop after revving the engine, or you observe any other noise that doesn’t match
one described above, go back to ASIST for further diagnostic and repair information.
2. To prevent this incident from occurring again, add a bottle of Nissan In-Tank Fuel System Cleaner
P/N 999MP-FSC00P to a full tank of fuel (in the vehicle’s fuel tank) according to the instructions on the
label.
• This product is proven to reduce carbon deposits on pistons and combustion chambers, as well as
cleaning other components of the fuel system.

Hope helps.

Location of knock sensor

Knock sensors can be difficult to locate because there usually buried under intake or exhaust manifolds and misc. engine wiring and plumbing. Knock sensors need to hear an engine knocking noise, therefore there usually located somewhere they can hear an engine knock. If it's a V6 then possibly it will be between the cylinder heads and access to them can only be attained by removing the intake manifold. I would suggest calling a Nissan Dealer parts person and ask them. Good luck.

2004 Cadillac Escalade knocking noise

Make sure oil level is adequate.

Also, this could be an exhaust leak that is being closed as the manifold and/or block heats up.
