Question about 1985 Chevrolet Corvette

1 Answer

Hi I have a 1985 Corvette and I need to remove the ECM which is in the Dash on the passenger side, how do I get that Dash pad assembly out to get to the ECM. According to my Chilton manual it comes straight out the front. I can't get to it from underneath....HElP.

I got some help from another source, the ECM is held in place with a bracket with two 10mm screws. When those are removed the ECM slides down and out from under the Dash. The only hard part about all of this is you have to practically stand on your head to see the ECM up inside of the Dash and to remove it, once it's out you can unplug the wiring harness and take it out of the car. I didn't have to remove the ECM from the car to do the Prom change out so the whole job took me about a total of 10 - 15 minutes once I figured out how to go about doing it. Thank you for the help.

Where is the ECM located

Hello.

The ECM is mounted on the right side of the dash above where the passengers feet would be.
The lower panel will need to be removed to see it.
Here is the service manual procedure to remove it.
  1. Turn ignition to "OFF".
  2. Disconnect battery ground cable.
  3. Remove right hand hush panel.
  4. Disconnect connectors from the ECM
  5. Remove ECM mounting hardware.
  6. Remove ECM from the passenger compartment.
  7. Remove ECM access cover.
  8. Transfer PROM unit to replacement ECM. Using two fingers, push both retaining clips back away from the PROM. At the same time, grasp it at both ends and lift it up out of the socket. Do not remove the cover of the PROM. Use of unapproved PROM removal methods may cause damage to the PROM or socket.
  9. Remove new ECM from its packaging and check the service number to make sure it is the same as the defective ECM.
  10. Remove access cover.

There you are. I hope your repair goes well.

1985 corvette, pulled the hood release and the diverside opened but not the passengers side so now i can't open the hood, how do i release the passenger side that is stuck

have someone push down on that part of the hood while you pull the release. Usually that frees it and it should be adjusted up so it will open again

well your in luck i just removed mine today lol. there are 5 1/4 inch screws on the bottom side of the dash on the passenger side of the car remove them pull the plastic cover down and disconnect the light mounted on the piecce you just removed next make sure your battery is disconnected cause it may fry it if power is connected. Next you will need a 10mm look straight up you will see the box it is aluminum with 2 wire harness attached.
