Question about Pontiac Firebird

All Dashboard guages and lights went out on my 1997 Pontiac Firebird 3.8L Automatic Trans. And it will not crank. When turning the key, there is silence and none of the dashboard or guages lights will come on.

The battery is fully charged. Just no power getting to the ignition and all guage lghts and the dashboard light are dark. And the car will not start.

I have the same problem with my '99 Grand Am. Battery and cables are fine. Good ground but nothing beyond!

Started with engine not turning over (no sound at all). Lights ok. Slamming the passenger door or hood would miraculously solve. Same for banging a bit on something underneath just in front of the passenger's front tire. Replaced that thing, and alternator (not sure if that was what I banged on); including battery 3 times in 3 months because it would be drained! Turns out it's probably an electrical problem (radio needs to be turned off then back on when drive for a while then cut the engine). Have checked fuses, they seem ok. I am original owner layman with 1991 305 V8.

1997 pontiac firebird will not crank and has no power at instrument panel wwill crank if breached at starter

No warning lights or gauges with key on? Possibly the ignition switch has a malfunction, or the switch has lost its power supply. One would need to check for power in and power out on the switch.

I havw a 1997 firebird security light comes on and car won`t crank. Keyfob does nothing. Could it be the antitheft module?

Been there: had broken wiring in the key cylinder -- wouldn't read the 'chip'. Dealer dinged me for a whole assembly, meaning a new key-cut .. and new IGN keys !
Learned later that I 'could' have bypassed the chip-reader with $1.59 of resistors from RadioShack ..

My 97 firebird died on a stop light. A guy told me that its the crank sensor gone bad. I need to see a pic or diagram of its location to replace it.

it's usually on the front of the engine by crank pulley, cylindrical with one wire coming off it. Points at the crank damper. Some are other places but I'm not sure on this one. Try Googling crank sensor, 97 firebird.

Sounds like you might have a stuck governor valve. It is located on the drivers side near the rear, under a round steel cover about 3 inches in diameter.

Crankshaft Position Sensor

The crank sensor is on the front of your engine behind the harmonic balancer. You will need a balancer puller for a 3.8 and a crank sensor alignment tool to do this lob.

1997 pontiac won't stay on

i had the same prob. w my 97 grand am. i bought a new ignition switch and installed it...after installing you have to reset the theft system. all you have to do to reset is turn the key far enough for it to bump the motor over then leave the key in the run position for about ten to twenty minutes...might hook bat. to charger cause if it dies in process you have to start all over...the theft light will either blink then stay on or go out completly....
