Lose of engine power , bucking and misfireing

My 2001 sonata has a problem after i drive it a while. The tach falls to zero and the engine loses power. i let off the gas pedal and the tach goes up to idle and the engine gains power again. when i down on the gas pedal it goes good, but when the engine is at a stedy speed it happens again. It seems to do this after i drive more than five miles. let me know what other information i could give you to help explain this problem

The first thing to look for is a disconnected air hose

The next thing to have tested is your Idle Speed Controller (ISC). The car's computer attempts to control the idle speed by opening or closing the ISC. The valve on the ISC allows extra air to bypass the throttle plate. You'll want to have your ISC tested. Another components that lets air bypass with the throttle body is the fast idle air valve (FIAV). This should only be active when engine is cold, but if it's always open, it can cause stumbling.

Next, the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve should be checked. This valve is located under the throttle body and if it's malfunctioning will cause stumbling.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

The correct procedure for diagnosis calls for scanning your engine management computer for error codes/logs. These error codes/logs would then correspond to a general area where to start checking/replacing. Offhand, your describe problem could either point to:

  • fuel related problem;
  • electrical related problem.
  • Temporary probable workaround solutions would be:
  • clean your throttle body, throttle position sensor, idler compensator, add injector cleaner to your fuel;
  • check/re-connect plugs and connectors;
  • check/re-connect sensors.
Just a start, do postback how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

Why is my pt cruiser losing power, but not stalling?

I thought it was a fuel problem but when you say the tach and speedometer go from zero to full speed and RPM has me stumped Thinking maybe the computer was malfunctioning. Then you talked about the transmission bucking and that made me thinking it was slipping and then grabbing again slipping and grabbing. Check the fluid on flat surface engine warm and look at the dipstick and make sure it is full and not over full the color should be pink not dark and shouldn't have a strong burnt smell. Do you have the check engine light on the dash if so have it checked for free at an auto parts store and see what code is in there

Car dies while driving, something is sucking the battery

Check your engine grounding wire. That or you do not have the alternator connections on securely

My friend's 2001 Hyundai sonata does this. I found out many issues with the car, most of the issues were censors. It was the main issue in the Hyundai... Try scanning the ecu for codes, it will tell you something.

Dashboard gauges fail & engine misfires.

Does the check engine light go on??? there have a couple possible causes for your issue, one could be a clogged fuel filter, another could be a plugged catalytic converter.

the new version or autocom cdp pro add many kinds of functions, may be it can work on your car, you can have a browse.

You most likely just need the tach repaired, they do fail. There is a company called Speedotach that repairs these as well as others, just google it

My 2001 Hyundai Sonata's check engine light is on and it's running really rough, trying to die when idling and surging while being driven. Could his be a sensor, or maybe a coil? Thanks for any info you...

I Have similar problems in mine. At engine idle it sounds like the engine has "hiccups" and when accelerated i lose power and sounds boggy or like the engine is choking. i ran tests and it is caused by failire of the oxygen or O2 censor. If you look at the very front of the engine at the exhaust manifold where the exhaust system starts there will be 2 plugs on the right side of the manifold and the bottom one is the o2 censor.

I have a 2001 Dodge Ram 3500 4X4, w/5 spd tranny. I am having trouble with my HVAC controls (they quit working and only hot air comes out), and also the instrument cluster. Periodically I lose the tach...

tach is most likely a cam sensor, hvac could be a bad vacuum problem (bad hose ) the electrical (dash stuff) I would start looking for a loose or bad ground wire or dirty battery terminals

OK, if you have a misfire at a high rate of speed and it is intermittent, I wouldn't worry about it unless it makes the engine lose power or affects gas mileage.

If you want the engine to work perfectly, however, I would find out which cylinder is missing, and correct the problem by replacing coil packs or what not until it doesn't do this anymore.

Also, a bad O2 sensor can cause a 'random' mix that may come and go over time.

Tach. drop's to zero while driving 70 ?

I have had the almost same problem twice. A 'thump', like the engine missed a fire and tach drops. Seems OK after restart. Electrical? Timing chain slip?
Has 135,000 mile. Any clues?
