Question about 1991 Nissan Maxima

1991 Maxima Turn Signals

I was working on trying to solve a problem with the speedometer and now the turn signals stopped working. I took off a good portion of the dash and kick panel to get to the rear of the instrument panel. I put everything back together and now the turn signals don't work.

I have a Haynes repair manual but it doesn't offer much help.

I figure I probably accidentally disconnected something. I don't know what the flasher unit looks like. My hazard lights work. The fuse is not blown. There is no clicking when I try to engage the turn signals. The instrument panel lights for the turn signals light up when using the hazard lights, but not for the turn signals.

Well I have little experience working on cars, so I will try my best.

I removed the "kick panel" on the driver's side under the steering wheel. There is a whole mess of wires under there and a lot of electrical components. The repair manual tells me that the flasher unit is located near there, but I can't seem to locate it. I suspect that when I removed the panel, I must have disconnected a wire.

I guess what I'm asking is how to locate the flasher unit so that I can test if it is bad or there is a loose connection. I can attach some images if that would help.

    That might just be it!

Well I was working in that area. I was trying to get behind the instrument panel because I originally had a speedometer problem. To get behind that, I had to take off one panel, and then another, and another... I didn't mention that because my book shows it under the driver's kick panel, but that could be wrong.

I did take off the panel that goes across the top of the radio area clear to the driver's side door. It includes the hazard lights button. It was really tough to get my fingers behind the panel to unhook all the connections. It would have been easy for me to accidentally pull it out too far and maybe loosen a connection.

My book shows the flasher unit under the driver's kick panel, but I don't think that book is entirely accurate for '91 models. It's '85-'91 or something, but it seems like it mostly applies for the early end of that spectrum.

Let me go check that area out and I'll be back to update this. Thanks!

I believe I found the flasher unit. It was under the driver side kick panel near the center console. My hazard lights work and when I disconnected the wires from that unit, the hazards no longer worked.

Does the flasher unit control both the hazards and the turn signals?

According to my book it looks like the flasher unit is located behind the radio. The connector is #M29, it should be a 8 pin connector with seven wires running through it. It seems strange that you could have affected the flasher unit if you weren't working in that area. Are you sure the fuses are ok?

Without knowing what you did it is pretty difficult to tell you where to start, especially if you say all the fuses are good.

The flasher unit controls both hazards and indication you will need to remove the shroud around the steering wheel and follow the wires coming off the indicator stalk down until you find the problem there should be some majour plugs on the stearing collum check thaat these are conected and work from there

My inside turn signals as stop working

If the turn signals are still working on the outside, you may have to replace the indicator lights on the inside of the dashboard. If you are unfamiliar with working with dashboards, take it to a mechanic. If you are willing to risk ruining your dashboard, you may try the information from the following link. 96 Ford Taurus no turn signals or hazards

Take the turn signal lever and jiggle it, a lot. If they start working, the switch is bad. You can also turn on the hazards and take hold of the button and push it left , right , forward and back and see if they start working. If so, replace the turn signal/ hazard switch.

94 Plymouth acclaim speedometer and dash lights wont work

Try replacing light bulbs and flasher which may correct the turn signals. Check all fuses, however as for the speedometer, the plastic clogs or wheels have run their course, If you intend to replace these, suggest you purchase a repair manual for your vehicle.

No turn signals but flashers work

There a two modules 1 for the turn signals and 1 for the flashers. Look under your dash around the steering wheel and fuse box area for one that is in the wiring harness.
