Question about 1997 Chevrolet Cavalier

1996 cavalier will not crank

Battery, starter motor are fine. car will crank and start for 2 or 3 days perfectly then after sitting for several hours, will not crank, when it will not start, all " run" ignition circuits funtion as they should. after a 15 minute or so period of time, car will then crank and start and will do so often as you want for next two or three days, then it will not crank again. key switch movement seems smooth, do not think it is a neutral safety switch problem. battery cables, etc are clean and okay any ideas? thanks.

When it wont crank, you will need a test lite to ck the small wire at starter for a 12 volt signal when commanded to start by the key. also make sure there is 12 volts from battery going to larger wire on starter. if so and still wont crank, starter replacement is probable. (assuming grounds are clean) they can be very intermittent. another quick test would be while trying to start, holding key in start position, rap lightly on starter with hammer to see if it kicks, if so, replace starter.

It sounds like a bad starter. You can have the starter tested at a place such as Auto Zone or Advance Auto, but it needs to be taken off the vehicle.

you surely need a new battery. a car may crank but will not start due to low battery voltage. My suspect is that the battery may have enough ampere to crank the motor but the voltage is too low to run the electronic system. if you have a meter, check the voltage as you crank the car. This is a possiblility but it is a rare occurence.

I recently replaced the battery in my 2001 Jetta TDI; it started up fine this morning, but after sitting for about 2 hours, it refuses to turn over. It cranks very hard and all the lights come on, so it...

Check, clean and tight correctly the battery leads. If the problem still occurs remove the electrical starter motor out from the engine, repair it (change carbon brushes, bearings, ...) and install it back in place. Then test the engine. It should cranking & start immediately.
Good Luck!

the 'no lights' part makes me think it could be a bad ground -- follow the ground cable from the battery where it should connect with the chassis then continue on the the engine itself -- make sure it's very firmly connected at each point (battery end as well)

1995 Cavalier No Start, No Crank

hi philavanilla'

Do you hear any click when you turn the key to start? If you don't that means your starter solenoid is not being energized and therefore no complete circuit for the starter motor.
If you hear a click but no cranking then the starter motor is probably NG. The best thing you can do to verify exactly what is wrong is to remove the starter, (the solenoid is mounted on the starter) and take it to a place like Auto Zone where they can check out the operation of solenoid and/or starter.
Be sure you disconnect the ground lead (that's the negative lead that connects to the frame/engine) before you attempt to remove the starter.

Hope this helps Good luck Loringh Ps Please leave a rating if appropriate Thanks
