SOURCE: 1996 MERCURY SABLE 65,000 MILES

Transmission problems are an issue with Sables. If you Google transmission and Mercury Sable you will come to quite a few complaints. There are actually a few posts on this website where folks are having issue too. Personally a cheap o-ring in my 1999 Sable went out resulting in a $1800 transmission repair bill. I literally gave the car away about three years ago. In almost 20 years of owning vehicles the two years I had the Sable was the most expensive and busiest in the way of repairs.

Before replacing anything else, it's important to clear the code before determining any more repairs are necessary. You can take the car to an autoparts store that features free diagnostic tests or you can disconnect the negative battery cable for 10 minutes to clear it. If after clearing the code P0401 still appears, then it comes down to 1 of 2 problems:

  1. Replace the DPFE sensor
  2. Replace the EGR valve
An illustration of both are found at the link below:
http://www.chiltonlibrary.com/content/images/9117/images/91174p58.gif

The DPFE is located at #1
The EGR is #2
Best of luck with your Sable.

1006 sable wont start itran fine 1 day then the weather droped to 10 that night .the next day it would not start it just pops

Sounds to me that water is present in the fuel system. Another would be a defective coolant sensor, and air temp sensor, these detect outside temp and render this output with the ECM.

Try disconnecting your park lights after you have a charged battery to see if that is the reason your battery is going dead. If it's still charged then most likely, there's your problem. I would try this before tackling the switch.

95 Mercury Sable oil headache

1999Mercury Sable died...acts like battery dead or alternator, however with key off there is a click, click sound and as soon as you giggle ignition and make sound stop ...there is power but as soon as you turn key on it all goes dead again.. battery takes a charge and don't think its an alternator problem.. think it is a relay switch...possibly the windshield wipers.. have noticed that the wipers turned on for no reason a couple of times and once again when I was messing with this situation
