Soft brake pedal after rotor replacement

I took my wife's 2003 3.2 CL to Pep Boys to install new front rotors and brake pads, and to adjust the parking brake cable. After picking up the car, the pedal was soft, going all the way to the floor. I thought maybe they didn't bleed it properly, so I took it straight back and they rebled the system, and then told me that I had a blown master cylinder. Since then, they have recanted, and say that they have no idea what is going on with the car. Is it possible that the parking brake adjustment could be causing the soft pedal? These guys are idiots and we have been without our car for 6 days now. Please help.

Excerpt from the helms service manual in regards to bleeding brakes on an '03 Acura CL:
CAUTION: DO NOT press brake pedal all the way to the floor. Press brake pedal half-way to avoid damage to master cylinder piston seal. Damage to piston seal can cause internal and/or external leaks.

most likely the geniuses at pep boys damaged your master cylinder while bleeding your brakes. the parking brake has nothing to do with a soft pedal because the e-brake is a cable system completely seperate from the rest of your braking system. I would take it back to pep boys and give them an earfull.

If they rebled the brakes and the pedal goes to the floor, chances are that the master cylinder is bad. Probably cost about $80-100 for the part if you could do it yourself

When slowing to a stop the brake pedal seems soft and i hear a clicking noise and a loud thumping noise until the car stops.


If your brake pedal is soft then you problem are very close what is called metal to metal on you'r pads. Either that or if you have rotors a common thing that will happen is that they may bet warped. Warped rotors is a condition in which the rotor glazes over and gets a shiny look to it. When this happens the brake pad will not catch the rotor as well and cause a vibration at brake. Try removing the tires and inspecting the brakes for any of those conditions. Honestly for the thumbing sound it may be a brake issue as well or a syspention part that is worn. Pep Boys does free brake inspections in most states, you can bring it over to them and have it tested for any of those conditions.

How can I change the rotors and brakes on a 2006 Cadillac?


Front brake
Step 1: Identify Front Disc Brake Components

Most front disc brake components include: brake rotor, brake pads, brake caliper, caliper mount and brake flex hose. Brake service usual occurs between 20,000 and 40,000 miles depending on driver habits, road conditions and brake pad/ rotor materials used.
Step 2: Remove Brake Caliper to Replace Pads

Removing Brake Caliper Mounting Bolts
Locate primary caliper mounting bolts; apply wrench pressure counter-clockwise (When looking at the head of the bolt) to remove the bolts, upper and lower. Make sure the bolt threads are in good shape and replace if necessary.
Step 3: Remove Front Brake Caliper

After removing the primary caliper mounting bolts lift the brake caliper off of the rotor and then tie or secure to the side, being careful not to bend or kink the brake caliper flex hose. Thoroughly inspect brake caliper and brake hoses for leakage, cracks or chaffing and replace as needed. Next remove the brake pads (If not mounted in the caliper) and secondary caliper mounting bolts. Notice how great protective gloves work, most technicians use them on the job today.
Step 4: Remove Brake Pads

Once the brake pads have been removed, make sure if there is anti rattle hardware to transfer to the new brake pads. Some brake pad manufacturers will include the proper lube (Caliper slides) and anti-rattle hardware to ensure proper performance of their product.
Step 5: Remove Caliper Mount

Finish removing secondary caliper mount bolts and remove caliper mount. Note: clean and lube caliper slides and pad friction surfaces of all foreign material or build-up.
Step 6: Remove Brake Rotor

With the caliper mount out of the way you can now remove the brake rotor. Sometimes it can get stuck so you may need to tap it with a hammer or use penetrating oil to free it up. Some manufacturers use small screws to hold the rotor on as well. Clean and inspect wheel studs, replace if any are damaged. Also clean bearing hub rotor mount surface to ensure the proper mounting of the new brake rotor. Inspect the ABS sensor wheel for cracks or damage and replace as needed.
Step 7: Depressing the Brake Caliper

Resetting Brake Caliper
To install the new brake pads you must retract the brake caliper piston. Remove the master cylinder lid or open the brake caliper bleeder screw to allow excess brake fluid to be released if necessary. Install C clamp tool and gently tighten clamp until caliper piston is fully depressed. Note: use old brake pad to protect the caliper piston. Close the bleeders once the piston is retracted completely
Step 8: Installing New Brake Rotor

Install new brake rotor, the new rotor is manufactured with a protective film over the rotor to keep it from rusting, remove protective film with brake cleaner before installing; also after the brake job is complete you may experience a small amount of smoke from the rotor when first used. This is normal and will go away after the first couple of uses.
Step 9: Installing New Front Brake Pads

Reinstall the front brake caliper mount, and then install front brake pads. Make sure the pads are seated properly in the caliper mount; it must be a close fit to work properly..
Step 10: Reinstall Front Brake Caliper

Re-Install front Bake Caliper
Reinstall front brake caliper and reinstall caliper-mounting bolts, recheck all mounts and mounting bolts. Check the caliper slides to be sure there is no bind and that the caliper moves freely back and forth on the caliper slides. Bleed brake system per manufacturer's specifications to relieve any air trapped in the system. Before driving the vehicle, push the brake pedal down and let it up slowly, repeat until normal brake pedal operation resumes, this operation is forcing the brake pads to travel to the brake rotors.

2007 camry brakes vibrating


Installing new brake pads on toyota camry solara 2006 front rotors and pads and rear pads. Steering wheel would shake while breaking on 50+ miles per hour speeds. All fixed now.

My 2003 Lincoln had new brakes and rotors 6 months ago - now, i notice a squeek when I apply the brakes - also, on snow when lightly braking, my brake pedal pushes itself against my foot in an up and down...


if you had brakes and rotors 6 months ago,did you do just front or just rear?
if you did front and squeal is in front,the new pads got hot and it glazed them,but the rotors are you pulsating pedal,are you sure they did rotors and pads?
there is no way this should be happening in 6 months.

My brakes squeak in my toyota camry. How do I get


I am assuming you already changed the brake pads. Make sure that the backing plate is on the backside of the pads it wouldnt hurt to put some disc brake quiet (spray) on the backside of the pads. also make sure all of your caliper shims are in place and not rubbing on the rotor. Make sure rotors have been resurfaced or replaced if they are too thin. any imperfections will cause vibration which will cause noise. Some cheap brake pads will squeek no matter what you do. in this case I recomend ceramic brake pads the best price I have found is at pep boys this type of brake pad is superior and very quiet, stays cooler, less brake dust on rims and much better braking. I use pep boys ceramic pads on my customers cars and have had no complaints from them. where with cheaper quality pads it is hit and miss that is why i tell my customers up front if they want the cheaper pads they should expect some noise from time to time and not to be alarmed. It doesnt mean anything is wrong just too much vibration and heat while braking

Repeated warping of front brake rotors. Have replace rotors 3 times with both Chrysler OEM and aftermarket. Replace calipers, ceramic pads, etc. Still warps rotors in less than 5000 miles.


do you do a lot of hills work?if so use the gears ,ifdown hill not the brakes if it is auto then slip it down i gear . make sure your rear brakes are adjusted regularly,but for the main part i would think it is the driver that is the problem,you may get an occasional faulty rotor but not three sets, over heating is the cause of your problem.dont missunderstand me chrysler brakes arent anything special but they arenot that bad , slow down

1999 Chevy Tahoe- Soft Brake Pedal


Try having the dealer flush and bleed your system. It is very hard to bleed ABS systems yourself and have safe brakes that still work afterward. Bleeding non-ABS brakes yourself is easy not the same for ABS brakes. Valving, sensors and what-not require a tech and the correct equipment in my opinion. You do it wrong and you could ruin your ABS system. Do that and see if they firm up. I replaced my brake shoes/pads at the same time all new everything in back, drums/springs everything and new rotors up front. then I had the chevy dealer flush, refill and bleed system. Stiffer pedal and brakes work better. Keep in mind the brakes on 99 Tahoes are inaedequate, require new rotors often, heat up and fade/glaze pads regularly. I replace my pads long before they wear down because they glaze up and start fading early. I'll rough em up once maybe, next time, new ones. Every two brake jobs, new rotors for me. Just how it is. They will stiffen a bit and work better but they will never be awesome brakes. Just how it is on 99 and earlier Tahoes. Hope it helps. Very important to bleed correctly though. I'll bleed my 83 Toyota 4x4 myself but not the Tahoe.

Parking brake pedal goes to floor


Hello;
The parking brake cables may be stretched and in need of adjustment. Follow the cables along to a nut. Then you can tighten the adjusters up on both sides until you have the proper tension. Also make certain none of the brackets are bent or broken that the cables ride through.

Uneven wear on new brake pads


sounds like the caliper slides are frozen /also make sure you have the right pads for the application

Brakes just dont seem right.. dealer said they put on new front rotors when i 1st complained.. but only got alittle better, brakes still seem like i have to apply with alot of force, when with my wifes...


If the vehicle has rear drum brakes, I would check the adjustment on them, if they are too loose, this will cause the brake pedal to go down low.
