You can test the fan motor by running a 12volt jumper to it from the battery to see if the problem is with the fan or elsewhere

The radiator fans stopped working on my 1993 colt vista. what is the problem?

Unless you are in a very hot climate, with no air con working the radiator fan does not normally come on.

Tip

Find Causes of Engine Overheating

If your engine is overheating, Try this procedure:

  • Dirt and debris can get lodged in the radiator air flow paths. This can block the radiator and cause your engine to overheat and damage the engine.

  • The thermostat can be stuck close. If you feel the upper hose very hot and the lower hose cooler than normal, it may be a stuck thermostat.

  • Make sure the radiator and the overflow bottle are filled to the proper levels.

  • Bleed air from the coolant system:This is best done by running the engine with the radiator cap off until you see when the air bubbles stop coming up.

  • Check the radiator fans: The easiest way is to turn on the cars air conditioner and turn up the A/C fans. Both radiator fans should come on when the A/C starts

  • Make a pressure test by using a pressure testing tool (available at most auto parts stores). Use the pressure shown on your radiator cap. Most cars are 16 PSI or less, so don't exceed that pressure. Replace the radiator cap if it doesn't hold the pressure.

  • This procedure does not cover other engine internal issues like blown head gasket. If this is required, another procedure will be followed.

Will a bad temp sensor make a car run hot

a temp sensor only monitors what the engine temp is it will not cause the engine to overheat or run hot. check to make sure the rad cooling fan is working if not it could be a bad fan motor, temp sensor for the computer to turn on the fan or a fan relay. there are 2 temp sensors on motors. one is for the gage or light the other is to tell the computer to turn on the cooling fan.

At witch point on my temperature gauge should the radiator fan turn on cause right now the needle on the gauge goes almost to the red when fan switches on The car is a 98 Ford contour gl

The fan should turn on at no more than the width of the needle past normal. It should be running just about all the time after normal operating temperature is reached.

Coolant sensor bad

First replace the thermostat at the end of the hose where it meets the engine. then fill 50/50 start engine if it starts to get normal hot have some one shut the engine off and grab the fan it should be hard to turn if not replace thermostat clutch for fan about 40 dollars don't tip wrong way liquid will run out. Or radiator plugged

My 2003 chrysler 300 m special is over heating. the water level says its got plenty of water. the temperature gauge will drop when i turn the heater on

Coolant in the resevoir doesn't tell you what is in the system,
if you don't have vacuum when the engine cools off.

Do you have coolant flow thru the radiator,is the
thermostat stuck?

Are the fans coming on?

My check engine light turns on after my 1989 honda civic haas been on for 5 minutes or longer and it starts over heating

Hi there. It sounds like your cooling fan and/or electrics associated with it might not be working correctly. Perhaps the reason for the engine light coming on is that your engine temperature is too high as a direct result of the cooling fan not working properly. If after starting the engine you don’t see, or hear the radiator cooling fan working, this is the most likely cause of the engine overheating. You then need to have either a Dealer or Service Center identify why the cooling fan is not working – wiring/connections, fuse, sensor or fan motor. Hope this helps, Scottech.

Radiator fans comes on, but car dont start. On a cold engine.

Check the engine relay by tapping it a little . relays sometimes get stuck. It is in the engine compartment at the fusebox.Remove it from the box and clean it. If your car starts. replace the relay.

Aircon not wrking & Warning light on dash

I am thinking that South Africa has a bit different configuration of lights than we do here in the states, over here, the third from the top is the SRS light, but I think you probably mean the radiator light.

The sensor on the over flow bottle goes bad, and the light comes on. Is the bottle feeding back into the radiator, if not, this could be a problem, how are the actual fluid levels in the system itself, not in the overflow, if you have a small leak in the radiator, it will keep the car from creating vacuum to draw fluid in from the bottle, so your bottle will always be full, while your engine starves for water.

How are your temps running on the engine? The AC has a safety switch will shut down the compressor if the temps are too high... if you are running the original stock radiator, I would bet that it needs replacement, it could well explain BOTH your problems. Check your radiator and fans (if your fans don't come on when you turn on your AC, it could also kick it off) With the car sitting there, started but still cold, turn on the AC, check to see if the fan on the timing belt side of the engine turns on - it should regardless of temperature.

Again, while it could be a fan, my bet is on the radiator.

Cheers,
Scott
