You can test the fan motor by running a 12volt jumper to it from the battery to see if the problem is with the fan or elsewhere

Find Causes of Engine Overheating

If your engine is overheating, Try this procedure:

  • Dirt and debris can get lodged in the radiator air flow paths. This can block the radiator and cause your engine to overheat and damage the engine.

  • The thermostat can be stuck close. If you feel the upper hose very hot and the lower hose cooler than normal, it may be a stuck thermostat.

  • Make sure the radiator and the overflow bottle are filled to the proper levels.

  • Bleed air from the coolant system:This is best done by running the engine with the radiator cap off until you see when the air bubbles stop coming up.

  • Check the radiator fans: The easiest way is to turn on the cars air conditioner and turn up the A/C fans. Both radiator fans should come on when the A/C starts

  • Make a pressure test by using a pressure testing tool (available at most auto parts stores). Use the pressure shown on your radiator cap. Most cars are 16 PSI or less, so don't exceed that pressure. Replace the radiator cap if it doesn't hold the pressure.

  • This procedure does not cover other engine internal issues like blown head gasket. If this is required, another procedure will be followed.

Unless you are in a very hot climate, with no air con working the radiator fan does not normally come on.

Will a bad temp sensor make a car run hot

a temp sensor only monitors what the engine temp is it will not cause the engine to overheat or run hot. check to make sure the rad cooling fan is working if not it could be a bad fan motor, temp sensor for the computer to turn on the fan or a fan relay. there are 2 temp sensors on motors. one is for the gage or light the other is to tell the computer to turn on the cooling fan.

At witch point on my temperature gauge should the radiator fan turn on cause right now the needle on the gauge goes almost to the red when fan switches on The car is a 98 Ford contour gl

The fan should turn on at no more than the width of the needle past normal. It should be running just about all the time after normal operating temperature is reached.

Coolant sensor bad

First replace the thermostat at the end of the hose where it meets the engine. then fill 50/50 start engine if it starts to get normal hot have some one shut the engine off and grab the fan it should be hard to turn if not replace thermostat clutch for fan about 40 dollars don't tip wrong way liquid will run out. Or radiator plugged

My radiator coolant fan would not shut off when the engine was turned off so I changed the relay. Everything now seems to be working as it should except that the "Service Engine Soon" stays on...

That means your computer through an error code and you will need to take it to an autoparts store and find out what error code it through!

NOTE: The radiator coolant fan should be operating until the collant temperature drops.

My 2003 chrysler 300 m special is over heating. the water level says its got plenty of water. the temperature gauge will drop when i turn the heater on

Coolant in the resevoir doesn't tell you what is in the system,
if you don't have vacuum when the engine cools off.

Do you have coolant flow thru the radiator,is the
thermostat stuck?

Are the fans coming on?

The heat symbol is appearing on my dashboard of my mazda eunos, do you know what bit is overheating? is it the radiator?

Check your coolant level and all your hoses first.

Do your radiator fans come on when the engine is hot? If not, you may need to replace the fan switch.

When the engine is hot, is the upper radiator hose also hot? If not, the thermostat is probably faulty and should be replaced. This is cheap and easy to check and replace. Remove the thermostat (at the other end of the radiator hose - you're going to have a bit of a problem with coolant unless you've drained the radiator or you've got a means of holding that hose up) and chuck it into some hot water - if the thermostat doesn't open you need a new one.

It would pay to check your engine error codes in case they can save you some time. If you're driving an American model WITH a check engine light on the dash, put a paper clip between terminal 10 and GND in your diagnostic box (right side of the engine bay near the air intake - has a big DIAGNOSTIC written on it). Then hop into your car, turn the key to ON (but don't start the engine). The light should go on steady - then off for 4 seconds. After this any diagnostic codes will be displayed. Long flashes are for the first digit in a two digit code - short flashes are the second digit. There will be a 4 second pause between each code AND the codes will repeat. If you get codes, record them and post them and I'll see what I can suggest.

Hope this helps
