Your thermostat is inside of a housing unit. If you know where your timing belt is, the thermostat housing unit is on the opposite side.

The first thing to check is the thermostat where the top radiator hose attaches to the engine. These can and do jam nearly shut. The reservoir cap blowing off can happen because of the thermostat. Can also happen if the head gasket has blown, though this usually causes a rough idle and running. The water pump may have failed or the belt that runs it has broken.

Location of thermostat 2003 Mitsubetsi Eclipse 4

The thermostat is found at the end of the top radiator hose . Find the top radiator hose and follow it to the engine .There you will find a thermostat housing with the end of the hose attached . There will be 2 bolts holding down the housing to the engine. Undo the bolts and pull the housing off and the thermostat will be there.
