Question about 1999 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

1 Answer

1999 Silverado, 5.3 engine, 4 wheel drive, battery good, no juice

Was working fine. Now no DC power, no lights, can't use power locks (have to lock with key), no inside lights, ignition does not click. No electrical, just dead. Battery is good.

same exact, but it will sometimes get power then start only to idle at 2000 - 2500 rpm, then suddenly lose battery then die!

Car shuts off, battery light comes on, steering wheel locks up, all while driving

I am assuming you mean you loose power steering when the steering wheel locks up, which would be a normal event if the engine dies. Same goes for the battery light since the alternator would stop charging the battery.
Someone will need to figure out if you are loosing fuel or spark when the engine dies, then troubleshoot the problem. It may be difficult to find if the mechanic can not duplicate the problem in the shop.

When my 02 silverado 2500hd is in 4x4 the tires are locked and the truck won't move until I shift back to 2hi. Differential or Encoder Motor?

You can take this with a grain of salt but I am a junior in high school taking auto mechanics and my teacher use to work for a chevrolet dealership where they had a geo tracker come in because it would drive fine until placed in 4 wheel drive. Once placed in 4 wheel it would not move because front and rear differentials were geared differently from factory causing the wheels to lock up. If it has never been able to go into 4 wheel since you have owned it I hope this will help...

4x4 wont work

If you can have the codes scanned in your vehicle it would be very helpful to you. If you have a code for the encoder motor sensor or the encoder motor itself on the side of the transfer case, this is where i would begin, quite common with the push button 4 wheel drive. Thanks for using fixya!! good luck
