This is not a automatic, this is a manual transmission.

ALso how do I remove the cover for the shifter inside the vehicle, I removed the 5 screws, but cant get it to come out. Is there other sections that I need to remove before the shifter cover will come out?

It does not matter if the clutch is pressed in or not it still does the same thing. And also if the car is running does not matter. On the transmission there are two levers a small one that travels a small distance (controlled by the left and right motion of the gear stick), and a larger lever (from the up and down motion of the gear stick). I am thinking that it might be a linkage / cable problem or a problem inside the transmission (hope its not that!). I really appreciate your help in this.

ok thats a bit different. how does the clutch pedal feel? normal resistance? can you put it in gear with vehicle off? ck clutch fluid to make sure its full. try pumping clutch pedal 5-10 times to see if that helps. if the pedal feels ok and the fluid level is good, you could have a pressure plate problem in the clutch assy.

How do i fix a automatic transmission shifter stuck in neutral gear between the main gate and sport gate on a 2005 hyundai tucson gl 2.7

Make sure the brake lights actually work.

Also there is usually a small removable piece on the shifter (a plug filling a hole) after removing it you can stick something in there to release the shift interlock to be able to override it and shift it.

Or the shifter is broken, or gummed up with something that was spilled on it.

Hyundai accent won't shift out of park

You do have your foot on the brake when trying to shift ehh. If so could be a faulty brake to shifter cable.
Remove the center console and check that applying the brake de-activates the lock on the shifter

How do I remove the gear shift knob on Elantra excel 2005 5 speed to replace it.

i recently purchased an 05 Elantra, and mine is missing the cap to the shifter that has the shift pattern on it. from what i can see in my car you may have to remove this as there is a nut underneath the cap, which is threaded on to hold the rubber shifter in place.
