i called kia they said its not uncommon that if the timing belt is weak or old that an alternator belt breaking will cause the engine to jump time

What's it do when you boost it? In case your battery is low from alternator belt problem.

I am not sure where the crank position sensor is on your car but when the alternator belt broke on my Buick it trashed the crank sensor that is located next to the crank shaft pulley. The computer needs the crank senor to know the position of the crank shaft. If the sensor is bad the car will not start.

If your timing was off then was it actually the timing belt that broke and not the alternator belt? I've never heard of a timing belt being used to drive the alternator.

Check all the pulleys and make sure you dont have one with a bearing going out

I have a 99 sebring lxi the atlenator belt broke so we replaced it. without the belt the car started and was fine then when we replaced it and went to crank it, it wont start

If you have been running the engine without the alternator hooked up then all the power is being provided by the battery. You may have run the battery very low and too low to crank the starter over.

As a first step see if you can jump start the car off a battery in another vehicle with the engine running in that vehicle. If the sebring starts then the fault is with the battery and it will need to be disconnected and fully charged (provided the battery is still sound) or replaced. Before you do that, remove the serpentine belt that you just replaced and check that all the pulleys connected on that belt that are being driven by the crankshaft pulley (like the alternator pulley, tensioner pulley etc etc) can all be rotated freely and have not seized up. Often belts will break because one of the pulleys it is driving has seized up.

How to diagnose timing belt verses cam sensor wont start and sounds funny when turning over

If it sounds like it has no compression I would vote for the timing belt. Code 16 is for the cam and crank sensors being out of sync, and code 340 is no signal from the cam sensor. Which would happen if the cam is not turning.

I have a 91 olds delta 88. Serpentine belt broke. fixed that. put a brand new battery in. it act like it wants to start but it wont. any ideas

Is it possible that your battery is weak due to the fact that you belt broke, and the alternator wasn't charging for some time. This probably would present itself by cranking over very slowly. Test your battery voltage and see if it reads 12.5 v -14.5v. I would like to know how long the car was driven with no belt. DId it have time to overheat?

My belt broke and now my car wont start why not?

Ok. If your car was running and then the belt broke and you continued to drive it. The case may be that you drained the battery because the alternator runs on the belt and the alternator keeps battery charged and if belt broke and you continued to drive then you may need to jump start vehicle. I guess I shouldve asked earlier but have you replaced belt yet?

My car just died while i was driving it.. had a funny smell through the vents.. no other warning signs.. Its not battery issues or altenator.. its somethign to do with the engine.. car wont even start now.

If the smell is like burn rubber, and the car crank fast and wines the problem is the timing belt.

if the smell is like electrical burn and the car do not start anymore the problem is alternator.

if the drive belts are broke, one of the pulleys is locked, spin them to see which one is bad.

good look amigo.
