Question about 2000 Toyota Tacoma PreRunner

1 Answer

Speedometer showing excessive speed, no noise coming from dash.

2000 Toyota X-cab Pre-Runner showing wrong speed (way above normal.
Do you think this could be the speedometer cable? I'd like to fix this myself to save costs, $ is tight.
Thank you for your thoughts/and or help!
By the way, there was no prior warning to this happening.

    lancer,
Tires are the same. Live on dirt road, could there be any dirt stuck in there? What about calibration?
Willing to try, but not a mechanic by far!
The repair manual seems like a smart choice, do they carry them at Pep Boys or Kragen etc..?

    Thanks for the advice!

If you didn't change the tires recently then it is the speedo cable. Depending on how good you are this repair is considered to be fairly easy but I recommend purchasing a Chilton repair manual. About 10 bucks. If you do the labor you'll probably save a couple hundred bucks. Good Luck

You change the speedometer or just the cable?
You mean when you drive and the speedometer turn too high or low then normal?

If so. Wrong cable/or speedometer.

Tachometer jumps above operating speeds and bucks frequently at highway speeds. Note, just recently had intake gasket replaced.

I dont think your problem is related to the intake manifold gasket. My experiance leads me to believe that your speed sensor is bad(VSS) Back in the day it was a cable attached to the tranny that gave you mph on your dash.In today's "fly by wire" society this would be the most likely suspect.symtoms would include downshifting for no reason your speedometer would drop to 0 and the tach would skyrocket.Vehicle may come right out of it and operate normally,or it may continue to buck for a while and then even out.I would start there.

1998 T-100 Toyota cruse control will not engage. The dash indicator comes on when the switch is on but it will not engage. I have a check engine lite whose code is speed sensor. I replaced the transmisson...

The Haynes manual I have doesn't show another speed sensor either. However, if your speedometer is working then it must have either a speedometer cable or another speed sensor of some type. My 1987 Toyota Supra had a speedometer cable and the speed sensor was in back of the speedometer. It used a spinning disk attached to the cable. The disk broke and left me without cruise control. I don't know if you have a similar arrangement in addition to the transmission speed sensor.

I don't believe the cruise control will engage with a speed sensor DTC set or a faulty speed sensor. So the code must be erased even if you fixed the problem. If you erased the code after your fix and the code returned, try to determine if the speed sensor is getting the 5 volt reference voltage from the ECM. If not, then either a wiring problem or faulty ECM.
