Question about 1997 Dodge Caravan

Intermittant instrument cluster

My 1997 Dodge Grand Caravan's instrument cluster intermittently goes dead. We lose all indications: speed, tach, gas, oil, etc. Then, for no particular reason it will all come back. The in-out cycle lasts for days at a time. It does not seem to be associated with any input or event. Sometimes the change occurs with the next startup.

    yes i have the same problem but all the gages are stuck in the last spot they shut off in and when the key is out of the car the last 3 mileage lights stay on and the last 3 D3L driveing indicators stay on. i also notice i use to have the head light on delay after we ******* the car even if the car was of well u know. but now there is no delay

HIT THE DASH! The instrument clusters (gauges) have bad soldering joints. You can hit the dash above the cluster to jar it to connect. A hard hit. Many have this problem, and you are better off taking your instrument cluster out and soldering the connector pins on the back then purchasing a new one or taking from the junkyard. They are all the same, and fail with time if left unsoldered.

The body controller (BCM) must send a message to the engine controller (PCM) to tell the PCM that it's OK to start and run when a theft system is involved. As long as the OK-to-run signal can make it to the PCM, all will be well.

But during the times when the gauges are flat, the bus communication system is probably crashed and there's no way to deliver the message. The PCM has no recourse but to disallow fuel at that point, killing the engine. The only thing that doesn't fit is that the starter isn't taken away at some point, but it may be something that doesn't happen in every model year.
The solution is with the communication bus, the CCD. It operates on two circuits, 2.5 volts each and connects to every module on the van that needs to share information. The instrument cluster printed circuit board is actually much more than just a board, it's a processor in its own rite. It controls gauges, telltale bulb illumination and supports the CCD bus both through voltage regulation and supplies the point of circuit termination (ground). The termination seems to be the key. Without ground, the bus voltage is pushed far above its normal 2.3 to 2.5 volt range, into the 7-volt area. Bus communication depends upon a voltage matrix very close to 2.5 volts, so this effectively crashes the network. Everything becomes a zero. One very good diagnostic tool for when the system crashes is to apply a firm, open-palm slap to the dash just above the instrument cluster. Works almost every time. While the problem can be temperature related (parked in sun), a good jolt usually brings it back online and allows the van to start and run. It seems ham fisted but it's almost impossible to diagnose by disassembly. The act of touching the area around the cluster normally brings it back and you're faced with the question of whether it was coincidence or not. I prefer the slap. Testing the data link connector (DLC), the trapezoid-shaped connector under the left dash area, will tell you if the bus is crashed or not. The third terminal from the left on each row (8 apiece) is CCD bus. Remember that 2.3 to 2.5 volts is normal while the key is on and the bus is active. You should see the voltage dancing, varying rapidly in response to data transmission if tested with a digital voltmeter. Anything above this is likely to be FAR above, indicating a slap is at hand... you know what I mean. The board isn't cheap... close to $450 and it requires a calibration before the tach or speedometer will operate. This may involve a trip to the dealer; I'm not sure if aftermarket scan tools can accomplish this task. Labor to install a board can also vary according to your repair facility.

Try to replace the alternator, mine had the same problem, no gauges,mileage, or transmission range display, it was the alternator sending voltage spikes to the BCM and it was an intermittent occurance as well. Alternator was changed out, and problem went away.

Where do i start looking for a solution for the following problem o my 2000 dodge grand caravan se?


If you google ( resolder or solder dodge Caravan dash cluster ) you find pictures etc that will make it easier for you. It's actually a pretty common problem around that year. The solder in the cluster where your harness and wiring connector attach (at back) gets cracked and what your describing starts to happen. It's a matter of removing the dash cluster, remove cluster/circuit board from housing, flip it over and just re-heat/re-puddle the spots where the solder is on back of circuit board where that connector attached. I HAVE A 1999 CARAVAN THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER GAUGES ARE NOT WORKING. IT USED TO WORK ON AND OFF. WHEN I START IN THE MORNING THE GUAGES & SPEEDOMETER & THE GEAR SHIIFT POSITION INDICATOR WORK...


Yes you are ru=ight about cold solder joints. as you might be handy working on cars youcan try to fix it yourself, But if your not handy with tools andintricate things you best leave this work to those that are. Remove the instrument cluster, leavingthe wiresconnected. turn the key on and push on the electrtrical connecteras you watch the gauges that are/nt working. If the serial bus weren't makig a connection then the check engine light would beon, or is it? Wigh the key off disconnect the electrical connector and the pins that plug in I scrach them by pulling lightly on the with treaded needle nosed pliers slipping off till they are all a little ruoghted up. Reconnect and try again. Sometimes afterhavingthe cluster disconnected ou may needto disconnect the battery sothe ECM will look for the cluster again. This is a common problem but ther's many varaitions of reconnecting including using a true scanner to cycle the gauges in an output test.

This Seems Indicative Of a Poor Connection AT The CLUSTER Or A Junction Connecter Close to the Cluster. This is Assuming you Have Ruled OUT ALL ABS COMPONENTS, LOOK at These VERY CLOSLY Because of the Small Volts These Wires Carry , the SMALLEST DEFECT WILL Cause this Type of Symptom that you have given. Please try all of the Above, I feel Confedint that athis is where your Problem Is.

i had friends van do the same thing we spent hours looking for the problem,it turned out to be a lose ground wire inside on the fire wall where the wires come thru the fire wall and lose wires at that connection also, check all connections to make sure they are tight..

We have an intermittent problem with the instrument cluster. You will be driving along and the entire cluster dies. No tach, no speedometer, no lights, etc. Usually within the next 3 or 4 times the van is...


This is a bad connection within the printed circuit of the instument cluster. It seems to be worse in higher temps, like being in the sun with the windows up for several hours. (I feel it should be a recall) Sometimes a firm tap on the face of the cluster will bring it back, but the only solution at this point is to repace the cluster.

These vans have had issues with the PIN connections to the instrument clusters. With time the solder on the main PIN connection will begin to fail. The good news this may be repaired at home. First you'll need to remove the instruments. To do so remove the dash components from around the instruments then the (4) screws) that hold the instruments in place. Carefully detach the wire connection from the back of it; take to a well lit area. Look for a PIN with a failed solder joint (this will appear as a slight black or grey circle. If found apply heat and let solder be gin to flow; the allow to cool and reassemble. If you look at my history you'll see I've helped others with this issue. I had the same problem. Abs light would come on and I would lose all dash instruments. Hit a bump on the road and abs light would go off and dash would come back on. What I did to fix problem, lol I slaped the dash just to the right of instrument panel and it all came back to life. There seems to be a short there, and I slaped it back 3 times in a week and now for the last month it has stayed on.
