Right brake light out 2004 Prius

Under the panel there are 3 light sockets for tail light, backup light and turn signal.  there is no access to the brake light.  access is under sheet metal.  is this a dealer only repair?  Does the whole taillight assy need to be replaced?  Should this be covered by the Toyota extended warranty?

Th other post is incorrect, the 2004 has LED brake lights that are part of the tail light assembly. you have to replace the whole assy. There are two screws that hold the assy in, they are both covered by white cable clips. The clips just pull off and then you can use a 10mm wrench to remove the nuts on the screws. My brake light stopped working and during the removal, the LEDs started working again, hopefully you will find the same situation as the LEDs are supposed to last for years.

I just had same problem with my LEFT brake light, and also was told the entire assembly has to ordered and replaced -- at a cost of $181. I guess we'll see if the removal process gets mine going again, or if the replacement unit is necessary. I do think it's a little rediculous to require such an expensive repair for what is essentially a faulty brake lamp on most vehicles.

One of the bulbs doubles as the brake bulb.It is the one with two elements in it.Toyota extended wont cover bulbs.

Wrong, not a bulb. On the 04 Prius and other model years, the stop / brake light is an array of LEDs in the tail light assembly and you cannot get to them because it is sealed at the factory.

Replacing tail/brake/turn signal/backup lamp bulbs (page 59-60 of owners manual)

Sedan

The tail lamp, brake lamp, turn

signal lamp and backup lamp bulbs

are located in the same portion of

the tail lamp assembly. Follow the

same steps to replace either bulb.

1. Make sure headlamp switch is in

OFF position and open trunk and

remove two plastic mushroom nuts,

three push pins and the plastic

cover from inside the trunk to

access the lamp assembly.

2. Carefully pull the carpet away to

expose the lamp assembly hardware.

3. Remove four nut and washer

assemblies and the lamp assembly

from the vehicle.

4. Remove the bulb socket by

rotating it counterclockwise, then

pulling it out of the lamp assembly.

5. Pull the bulb from the socket and
push in the new bulb.

6. Install the bulb socket into the lamp assembly by rotating it clockwise.

7. Install the lamp assembly on the vehicle with four nut and washer

assemblies ensuring the washers on the nuts are flush with the body to

prevent water from entering the trunk.

8. Carefully push the carpet back in to place and install the plastic cover
inside the trunk with three push pins and two plastic mushroom nuts.

Is there a trick to getting to the rear turn signal on a 2003 ford focus hatchback. I had removed the screw to the lens cover but I still cannot gain access to the turn signal bulb to replace it.

Replacing tail/brake/backup lights and turn signal bulbs (coupe)

1. Make sure the headlamp control

is in the OFF position and then

open the hatchback.

2. From inside the luggage

compartment remove the wing nut

of the rear light assembly cover.

3. Using a Phillips screw driver

remove the screw. The lamp is still

retained by a spring loaded clip.

Remove by gently pulling out the

light housing.

4. Turn the bulb socket counterclockwise as far as possible and pull it

out.

5. Pull the bulb straight out of the socket.

Install in reverse order.

Hi i got a n reg ford transit recovery truck someone cut the back light wires now i cant find where they go could you help ?

Use a 12v test light, test the wires on the left side.
One at a time turn on head lights and locate tail light
wire and mark it. do the same thing for the brake light
and turn signals. Now measure out enough wire to go
the left light assy. and across to the right, plus 6". If
you wan't backup lights, turn the key to the on position(don't start engine) block the wheel and put in
reverse, locate wire the same way. After you hook up
the left socket, splice in the brake-backup and tail
lights, to go across to the right. Splice the plate light
in to the tail light 1/2 way across. The right turn signal wire should already be there. Hook up your
sockets, and thats it. Hope this helps. Good luck.

How do you change a brake light in a 97 accprd?

1. Open the trunk and remove the taillight cover by turning the knob.
2. Determine which of the two bulbs is burned out: tail/stoplight or turn
signal.
3. Remove the socket by turning it one-quarter turn counterclockwise.
4. Remove the burned out bulb from the socket by pulling it straight out of its socket.
5. Install the new bulb in the socket.
6. Reinstall the socket into the light assembly.
7. Test the lights to make sure the new bulb is working.
8. Reinstall the taillight assembly cover.
