On a 7.3 you have to take off the valve cover to test the glow plugs disconnect the wires from each glow plug and take a single wire run it from the positive pole of the battery and touch the tip of the glow plug. If it sparks it is good and if not it is bad. do this one by one. I have almost the same problem but mine is the icp above desired and here in belize nobody knows about 7.3.

Dont know the mileage of vehicle but as far as age goes the glow plugs are due for replacement and cold start issues are a good sign that they are .Not aware of any test for the glow plugs however they will be the cause of your cold start problem

One other thing make sure the electrical contacts on the glow plugs is giving a good contact and that a good and constant source of power is being delivered while in glow position.Good luck.

Ford F-350 7.3L Powerstroke Diesel very hard to start when cold.

have you ever replaced the glow plugs on your truck.this would be the first place to start with a cold start problem.the next thing would be a fuel pump problem to check.

I have a 1993 volkswagen jetta diesel and when the engine is cold it takes a while to start. I have to pump the gas pedal to get it to start.

pumping the throttle does not help just hold it wide open ,firstly check the preheaters ,and if they all work make another posting and we go from their ,,to check glow plugs remove the cable that connects then alkl together and then test with a cable from the + battery terminal and see if it sparks when you touch each heater plug in turn ,and renew the defective ones or go the whole hog and just change them .

these 7.3 engines always need a reliable source of battery power to start in any wheather when engine is cool, inspect the batteries and make sure they both retain at least 11.3 volts under load, if they are old batteries try replacing them if that still doesnt work inspect the glow plug solenoid for corrosion on the terminals or try replacing the whole solenoide

I have a 1994 2.8ltr Diesel (4M40 Mtr), Delica, that conks out

try changing all the heater plugs there are warn out by now,,if it realy dont like starting up on cold days do what i do,,, give it twice the heat up time,,,,,
turn on the kye wate till the heater light go's out then quikly switch it off and turn it back on for a re-heat before trying to start it up,,,also try changing the glow plug heater relay,, it should hold the glow plug heaters on for about 30 seconds after the light has gone off even if the engen has started and is running
but i bet its not doing this? giving twice the heat takes less out the battery than cranking it over and your not wearing out the starter as well?
doing this to my old girl gets her going every time!!!!!

97 7.3L powerstroke wont start?

Checking and cleaning the battery and conections at the battery and starrter not forgetting the all impotant grounds is a must at first. slow cranking do to bad battery's or conections is a common cause witch will allso decrease the effectiveness of the glow plugs. Allso the glow plugs of this truck do have a problem of going out so a new set wouldn't hurt the other thing to know about this truck is that the light indecater is just a recomendation the plugs themselves will stay on for around two minutes so a delaid start ten to twenty seconds prior couldn't hurt and will help the enitial cold start. Other known hard start problems for this rig consist of worn fuel pump, bad glow plug relay, or high oil presure sender. I allso would refrain from using either by pluging the truck in tell you can find the problem.

Hard to start when cold

Glow plug relay or the glow plugs are not working the way they should. Also check the cold start solenoid.
