Can I take the belt that goes around the air conditioning unit off and the car still run ok? And then put the belt back on next spring when I replace the unit then?

The car is a 2000 Dodge Intrepid 2.7 liter engine. As of now it takes a long time for the windows to defrost so it seems that the unit stopped functioning properly a long time ago. I looked at the diagram and the belt goes around the tensioner, the ac, and the C/S. The water pump is on the inside of the engine and is driven by the timing chains.

The engine I asked about is a 2.7 liter engine in a 2000 Dodge
Intrepid. The water pump is driven by the timing chains inside the
engine. The only belt on the belt diagram is the tensioner, the ac,
and the C/S. So knowing this do you think it will be ok to remove that
belt? Thank you for your help.

Don't know what engine you have, but as long as that belt only drives the AC you should be o.k. If the AC isn't noisy when freewheeling, or off, you can simply unplug the connector at the compressor, but if noisy all the time, yes the belt will have to come off, just double check that the belt isn't running anything else like water pump or something on the back (smooth side) side of the belt. Be aware that your defrost etc, will take a little longer to do it's job with that disconnected as it uses the ac compressor to displace moisture(humidity) in the air.

1978 GMC Vandura air conditioning belt replacement

I know this is no help really, but I have the part numbers for the belts but no diagram. I only have diagrams for serpentine belts.
Generally, the ac belt is the last one on the crank pulley. You should be able to tell if it goes around a pulley if you have empty pulley grooves.
Most V8 GM engines ran the AC belt around the crank and the water pump, but it depends on where they mounted the ac compressor.
And usually the compressor pivoted to adjust the tension.
If you can look down the groove of the ac clutch pulley and see any empty pulley grooves I would try running the belt in those grooves.
According to my Gates book, the alt belt goes around the crank and fan pulley, and the ac belt does too.

no it could be air condition clutch that engage/disengage the air condition compressor and disengage it through the pulley or could be the pulley bearings one of them . also check the solenoid that controls that clutch .
have a good luck sir .

I have a diagram for the belt. It has more pulleys on the diagram than I have on my car. Need to know if its ok to put the belt on the pulleys I have or if its the right belt. Thank you.

Hello
Most belt diagrams show the belt routing for california and federal emissions. The other pully in the diagram is probably a A.I.R pump for emissions in California, or it is for the air conditioning if yours is not equiped with air conditioning, also make sure that you have the right diagram for the car and the correct engine size. Hold your belt next to the new one and stretch them out together if they are the same size then use it just make sure that you are around every pully
Good luck
Chris

2001 dodge stratus air conditioning compressor failed bearings gone can i bypass system with a different belt

you can but it is a lot of work. many pulley changes bracket changes. you have to find the same engine that does not have AC and take all needed parts off of that. it is not worth it. consider just going to a salvage yard and getting a used compressor. it doesnt even have to work, it just has to have good bearings. it would be a lot less work going this route. any questions, reply back

Very loud clanging noises started while driving

Try to remove the belt for the ac and see if you still hear the noise, as it sounds like you may have blown the seal or bearing out of the ac compressor , not sure just a guess.

Can i bypass the air conditioning compresser with a smaller serpentine belt?

No. There is a tensioner pulley which controls the tightness of a serpentine belt. In addition, the belt travels a specific path. Bypassing the air conditioning compressor not only requires a different size belt, it would require rerouting the belt and omitting one component would mess up the travel of the belt and may actually result in reversing the rotation of some of the components that the belt turns. In addition, the belt tensioner is designed specifically for that length and size of belt. You would most likely affect the belt tension, which would result in slippage or overtightness. Overtightness on the bearings of the devices the belt controls will cause that unit to sieze.
