    starter motor cranks engine will not start wait twenty minutes or ten minutes it does not matter then it will start and run perfectly. It seems more likely to do this in the heat. Never has happened with the first start in the morning. Also the temp. gagues registered cold. while this is happening. Even after the engine has been running all day. Could this be a fuel relay? or a immobilizer problem? Other than this my Jetta runs great 130.000 miles on this car!

    I have been having a similar problem with my 99 1/2 Jetta. Turn the key and it bucks and won't turn over. Another try and it does and runs perfectly. I brought it to a garage yesterday and the mechanic ran it through the computer and it said I need some kind of a climate sensor (not sure if that's the exact name). He said it's very common on VWs and is pretty inexpensive to replace. I also have 1 misfire and he said the spark plugs need to be replaced (also a fairly inexpensive fix).

    Hi aricgrimes;

    Please provide more detail.

    Specifically what happens when you turn the ignition key.

    Any preliminary events that preceeded this condition.

    The reason I'm asking is that it is unlikely to have the starter motor crank and not have the engine turn over.

If when scranking the engine, the engine do'se not turn. The possible cause's are; the flywheel teeth are worn down or the start motor bendix is not moving into the engaged possition. You need to investigate these solution to rule them out.

Are you saying the engine cranks but won't start, or the engine won't crank ?
If the engine does not crank, you would check for voltage at the starter, the neutral safety switch, and the key switch as well as the ground connections.

When you say it won't start, do you mean it cranks but won't fire, or it just won't crank? If it just won't crank, you could be having an issue with the starter relay. The often become intermittent before failure. Many owners do not know there is a starter relay because it was added as a recall item i order to protect the iginition switch from burnout. The starter relay is located in the very front of the engine compartment, just to the left of the battery, on the back side of the radiator crossmember.

1996 manual jetta won't start. It won't even crank. There is a whinning noise when I turn the key from the engine but that's it.

Sounds like the starter drive is not fully engaging with the fly wheel... might try to tap firmly on the body of the starter while you turn the key but be careful not to hit the wires... Might get you going enough to get to a garage and have it checked. good luck!

Location of crank sensor 1998 jetta 2.0

It's located near the cam gear on the front of the engine however, the crank sensor, to the right of the oil filter near the bell housing is the part notorious for going out on these cars, and causing a p0322 and/or p0341 code, and sometimes others as well To replace the crank sensor you have to: Support the motor with a floor jack. Remove the starter, 2 of the starter bolts connect to the motor mount. Remove the motor mount from the frame, very easy. Remove the oil filter. That will give you just enough room to get an allen wrench in to remove the bolt holding the sensor in.

2003 jetta should have a chain not belt. if there is a large degree of angle from the crank to cam sensors, the ecm or computer will not enable the starter.when you say turn over ,does the starter make a noise and turn the engine, but the car will not start.....?low fuel can burn out an aged fuel pump, because it uses fuel to cool the pump.
have the fuel system pressure tested,or put gas in the throttle body.if it runs for a couple seconds, fuel pump is suspect.
if the engine is dead, you have to mechanically turn it over to see if it is seized.

Cold temps starter will not turn over the engine

I had same problem with my 03 jetta. I replaced battery to better cca and it did nothing. Each shop I went to had no idea. My friend who is a car guy installed a push button start. He told me his audi did the same thing and that it worked on that car as well. He said something like in the cold something condenses and shrinks and it won't spark, I know nothing about cars, so I can find out exactly what he did if you want. I do know that it works great and the parts were like 15 bucks total.
