Does it happen when its cold? Most vehicles will not allow the transmission to go into 4th or overdrive to get the engine and transmission fluid temp up to get the best fuel mileage. Once the engine/ transmission fluid temp rises to the specified temp then it will shift. Hope this is the issue your having cause this is normal.

Fourth gear... does it have a fourth gear or are you referring to "Overdrive"? Not many automatic transmissions have a fourth gear although many do have an Overdrive band that is activated by a hydraulic servo. The seals in your overdrive servo may be wearing or you may have suffcient deposits built up in the oil passages that are inhibiting the flow of oil to the servo. When was the last time you had a transmission flush and changed the filter? Not just a drain and fill, but a full-fledged transmission flush?

I have a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The engine light is on for about a week. Now I noticed, when I tried moving from a stop position, the car seems to move from 3rd gear instead of 1st gear. I have to...

The car Gods created check engine lights so people don't have to guess at where to start. Get the codes read. Then you'll have a starting point. Waste of time to guess until you do that.

Transmission Problem - Ford Escape 2006

P0732 and P0734 indicates gear ratio errors in 2nd and 4th gears, basically no 2nd and 4th gear. The one thing 2nd and 4th gear has in common is the band, the band is known to break, this is a common failure with this transmission and happens on a regular basis.

You need to remove the transmission to repair it.

Misfiring in 3rd and 4th gear

This sound like a timing issue, Check the points for proper gap, ck for proper timing, also ck the distributor shaft for looseness, or wabble, remove the cap and button and grab the shaft with your fingers and see if it moves back and forth, not in/out thats ok, but in a side to side type of movement. This can cause a missfire at hi rpm.

95 ford probe se auto. trans. shifts back and forth from 3rd and 4th gear once on hwy. suspect o/d switch or speed/shifting sensors. any ideas?

I own a 1995 Ford Probe SE 2.0L that suffered the same problem. The transmission shop Techs insisted the transmission was blown and needed replaced. After doing some research it turn out to be the Park Neutral Switch also known as a Transmission Range Sensor right below the air box. The part cost 54 bucks. The problem stopped after replacing it. About a year latter the problem came back. After doing some more research it turn out to be the VSS speed sensor. The part cost 57 bucks. The problem stopped after replacing it.
