Question about 1998 Plymouth Breeze

1998 Plymouth Breeze 2.4 liter - Failed inspection

Took car to Auto Zone for diagnostic check. Below is a copy of what I was given.

PO420
Definition: Catalyst efficiency low - bank 1
Explanation:
The oxygen sensors monitor the catalytic converters ability to store oxygen.
Probable causes:
1. - Catalytic converter defective (Failure possibly due to #2, 3, or 4.)
2. - Engine misfire or running condition
3. - Large vacuum leak
4. - Engine oil leakage into exhaust - valve guide seals, piston rings.

I would greatly appreciate it if you could tell me what to check, or what the problem may be.

Thanks

I don't doubt what you're saying to be true, but I do know that there isn't any oil or smoke (black or grey) coming from the tailpipe. Although, I will be doing a compression test. Thanks a million Regeetone

YOU most likely need a new catylitic convertor. the rear o2 sensor monitors if the convertor is doing its job and if its not it sets this code

O2 sensors do not monitor the ability of anything to store oxygen, who told u that!!! whoever it was they know nothing about electronic engine controls and sensors,

The Cat monitors do not measure the cats ability to store O2, what idiot wrote that!, The whole explanation is trash, take it to a dealer where the techs are trained.

Your O2 sensor up stream is gone and the engine is sucking air probably your pcv valve hose and is sucking oil straight into head and out D tail pipe! you have some good looking over to do on this by the sounds of it but do you notice oil missing a lot or do you bother to check and I would do a compression check on it before I spend any more cash on it!!! so start with compression test! see specks on line for suggested test pounds 145 pound per cylinder???net

My 2003 Lincoln Aviator emissions light is on and I failed inspection because of it. How can I pass inspection and fix this emissions problem? The inspection code given to me was PO420???

po420 is catalyst system efficiency below threshold. meaning is--- could be down stream 02 sensors or a bad convertor. try buy replacing down stream sensors, hopefully this may help. ( down stream 02 sensors are between convertor and tailpipe). have a good day !!

1996 plymouth breeze, leaking water pump. how

this depends on your level of mechanical expertise - it is an internal water pump, meaning you will need to disassemble the timing components to service (this is also a good time to replace the timing belt, as it needs to come off anyways and the belt is relatively inexpensive). if your vehicle has the 2.4 liter engine, there is nothing very difficult about this timing belt. however, i tend to caution people about attempting this if they are inexperienced, as reassembling the timing components incorrectly can cost you and engine. good luck!

1998 plymouth breeze is hard to steer. The power steering fluid is fine.

I would expect teither the power steering pump or the steering rack has failed. The good fluid in the unit is just not being put to use.
I hope this may have helped,
Tom

Hate to say it but not very likely. Mine cost me $1500 for a rebuilt. Doesn't hurt to check a few local shops that deal with transmissions.

They make a special socket to fit those which you can get at an auto parts store along with a new unit.
