Question about 1995 Toyota Celica

The battery on my '95 celica apparently keeps running down. have started it with jumper cables. now no dash light. so have removed same kind of fuse called s.t. and put in panel light and the panel light works. but what is s.t.?? do I need that fuse there to run the car? thanks. tim

    ST controls part of the ECM, and the Circuit Opening Relay, among other circuits..

    You need this to run the car.

Havent a clue on this one sorry ,but checking for a slow short is a major head ache most usual cause of overnight failure is altenator rectifier diodes

Why was the battery missing to begin with? I would start by checking all fuses under dash and Central hub. Check for burned in-line fuses,if any, coming off of battery cables.

Changed battery still wont start without jumper cables


if the new battery is good then you have a bad connection to the battery. use a rag to clean the connectors and batt terminals then put a thin smear of vaseline on the terminals before reconnecting. do not use copper paste.
if it starts and runs by jumping it, continues to run when jumper cables removed, and the battery light isn't on, on the dash then it can only be the battery connectors or battery condition that's at fault

Battery keeps losing voltage


Before going to procedure below, lightly rap on all relays with a screwdriver handle, a sticking relay can cause all kinds of problems.
Here is the test procedure for determining battery or alternator problem after requiring a jump start. Note, requires a voltmeter [$3.50 at Harbor Freight]
1] Check battery voltage on non-start vehicle. Will probably be under 12V. Verify good clean connections, look for cracked corroded or loose terminals.
2] Jump start. Note, always have the jumper vehicle running when performing a jump start, sounds basic but I actually had a friend who argued it should not, meaning he would be jumping with less voltage & could strand both vehicles.
3] With jumper cables removed, engine running, check voltage at battery. It should be 12.8V to 13.7V. If below 12.8V the alternator or voltage regulator are suspect. If in the range, the battery is either dead, low on water or in need of a full charge. If over 14.7V the voltage regulator is not functioning properly.
4] Failing those problems, with the vehicle shut off & the doors closed, disconnect the battery ground cable, put a 12V test light between the battery negative & a known good ground. If it lights, something, like an interior or glovebox lamp, is staying on. Remove fuses 1 at a time to find the problem circuit.

Engine won't start


The fact the engine rotates indicates a good battery, that's eliminated from the search.
The problem is of Main/Auxiliary Power Supply. Trace the Main Battery cacle from the Starter, if it has more than 1 Power cable attached, looking for a connector break running back to the Power Box. If the Starter has only 1 supply cable, then look for a loose joint on that Battery to Power Box Connector Block, or broken 'Spade' connector. If again all appears ok, by using the "Idiot" diagram, on the Power Box and Fuse Box, pull each Maxi and Service Fuse and Relay in turn, looking for a Failure. Should this not detect the fault come back to me again.

If you have a bad contacts at the battery, solenoid, ground and/or starter .. it could exhibit this kind of activity .. take the battery cables off the battery and clean those contacts till they are shiny, trace the ground wire to the frame/firewall and clean that contact (emery/sandpaper), and trace "hot" wire to solenoid/starter and make sure that they are clean and tight .. another possibility could be the neutral safety switch .. try starting it in neutral

in the fuse panel under the hood beside the battery there is a fuse marked IOD in your nearest right hand corner facing the vehicle. Pull the fuse, wait 3 min. Reinstall fuse.
