You can get the special tools to remove it or some people take a air hammer with a pointed bit and give the edge of the nut a quick hit in the direction the fan spins to break loose the nut.And to tighten it thread it back on half way then start the engine and when it spins it will tighten it up.

How do i get fan clutch loose on 97 ford explorer to put water pump on

Below are the tools used to loosen the fan/clutch from the water pump. Similiar tools can be purchased at harborfreight.com or at some large auto parts stores. The large tool can be attached to a breaker bar. It is positioned over the four water pump pulley bolts while the wrench tool turns the fan nut. It's a bit awkward but works. Good Luck!

there are four nuts that you must remove at the front of the pulley between the fan. remove fan, fan shroud, loosen accessory belts. remove water pump pulley and the pump bolts will be exposed. check belts for replacement while you have them loose. reverse procedure to install.

The cooling fans will not come on until 225 degrees. Normal temp is around 199-215. Sitting still in traffic most will inch up around 220 or so. When you turn ac on it turns the fans on and may cool down engine, Check fan operation.

Water pump removal

Put a prybar between 2 of the small fan bolts. Have someone hold the prybar, or rest it on the frame if it is long enough. Then turn the big nut on the fan to the left.It will be VERY tight. If that doesn't work, you can probably rent the fan removal tools from your local parts store.
