Question about 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee

4 Answers

After 15-20 minutes of driving my oil pressure starts to drop when I slow down or stop. It hits zero unless I rev the engine or contine to move. It's fine as long as I keep moving or rev the engine when I slow down or stop my oil pressure gauge drops to the bottom, when I take off again the gauge goes back up until I slow down again

What is the problem when the oil pressure gauge goes down to zero when you slow down or idle and then goes back up when you rev the engine or drive down the road. I ask this question and did not get a good answer

Oil thins as it gets hot, that is why oil is rated with 2 different numbers, like 10W-30W, this means 10W cold so it flows well and gets to the bearings quickly on cold start, and 30W so it stays thick enough hot to prevent low pressure, and due to this thinning hot oil pressure drops, but it should never drop to a point that is so low damage can be caused to the engines moving parts, most likely the oil pressure guage sender is the problem or less likely the guage itself, but to be safe pull the oil pressure sending unit out and screw in a mechanical test oil press guage, oil pressure should never be below 10 PSI on a really hot engine. The correct oil for your engine is either 5-30W or 10-30W, don't use thicker oils, it can damage the engine bearings.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Your concern "What is the problem...oil pressure gauge goes down to zero when you slow down or idle and then goes back up when you rev the engine or drive down the road" would indicate either two (2) faults:

  • insufficient oil level inside the engine;
  • insufficient oil pressure again inside the engine.
If the above solution has merit, pls click on my "Ask Me" to explore further or rate as you see it fit.

Just a start, do postback how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

Oil pressure drops and truck shuts off

I have to ask if you are sure the oil pressure drops first, or the engine stops first. The engine would stop if the oil pressure dropped below 5psi but only because the fuel pump would shut off. And it should start back up if that were the reason.
If something such as a relay or the ignition module is getting hot and killing the engine, it might have to cool down before it restarts. And the engine would stop then the oil pressure would drop to zero.

It plunges down to zero at times then reads eratic

Your oil becomes too fluid as the engine gets warmer. When the engine rotates slower at stops, the oil pump won't make pressure. At speeds, more oil is pumped and the pressure rises.
Have you recently changed your oil? Or maybe is too old. The real problem would be if you read zero at normal cruising revolutions.

Oils pressure gauge fluctuates

check the oil viscosity,it might be too old(driven for toomany miles)..

if thats not ityou might need to get the oil preasure lubricating pump checked, and id suggest you do it fast or theres a lot of engine wear and tear.

Oil Pressure Drops While Driving

your oil pump is either weak or there is sludge i9n the oil pan. my adives is to have the oil pan dropped . chances are sludge is the culprit. as the oil get's warm the pressure should only drop slightly but pressure is generally dictated by engine rpm. pumps are gear driven so if it was a bad pump your oil pressure would start out very low at start up.
