How to replace a coolant temp sensor on a 2001 vw jetta 2.0

I need to find a diagram on how to replace the coolant temp sensor on 2001 vw jetta 2.0 I am getting confused regarding the sensor, I kepe reading it should be black (old?) or green(newer) (blue for TDI?) I have 2.0 gls (not tdi) and it seems like the sensor is actually blue. Does this mean I need the blue one? its a 1999.5 new jetta... Also, other information I have gathered on chaning the sensor show totally different instructions (more ocmplicated for vr6 and for the tdi?) it seems in this picture that I just need to remove the slip, unplug the sensor, put the new one, and plug the clip back.. is it really that easy?

    Thanks for the information, I am going to try this. Yes my temperature readings go crazy, sometimes the needle doesnt move at all, then I will get on the road and it will jump up to 190 and then a minute later it will be back at the bottom.l I also have gotten P0117 and P0116 and they seem to fall in line with a sensor that's messed up.

Yes it is that easy. It should be a 4 pin connector located on the transmission side of the engine head in a plastic flange. Best is to wait for the engine to be cold. Unscew the radiator cap to relieve pressure but screw it right back on. On the 2.0L engines when you unclip the coolant sensor little or not coolant loss will happen if you do this. Just unplug it, pull out the clip, pull out the sensor, and the seal which sometimes stays stuck. Install the new sensor with a new seal lubricated with some coolant, make sure it's well seated and reinstall the clip. The sensor is well seated if the clip fits right over the top, just make sure both sides clipped into position. Replug it fill the coolant with VW original coolant mixed 50-50 with water if needed and done. If you have a fault you might need a scanner to erase the check engine or fault in the cluster.

What's the reason for changing it? Eratic temperature readings?

    Yeah most commonly it is the coolant sensor. Just make sure the pins are ok in the connector and not damaged. If you have an older sensor get it replaced but even I have seen the green ones mess up at times. There is a prolonged warrenty on certain years / models so get informed before forking out the cash. The sensor isn't too expensive anyways.

The fans are run by rad temperature, not engine temp on a VW.Somewhere on the rad you should see a wire harness plugged into it.That is a thermo-switch which turns the fans on and off based on coolant temp in the rad. My car is a lot older than yours but this switch is virtually hidden on the bottom driver's side of the rad. It has 3 wires going into it.There could also be another sensor attached to the engine block or head to monitor engine compartment temps after engine shut off. This will turn the fans on or off as well based on air temp in the engine compartment.

VW DTC 17704 (P1296) - Cooling system malfunction.

Coolant Temperature Sensor (CTS) is faulty and reading an incorrect temp'.

Replace with the new version of the sensor, clear the code.

If indicated coolant temp' is too low the thermostat is sticking open.

There are two coolant temp sensors. One by the oil filler tube and one near the bottom radiator hose near the radiator.
When you flushed the coolant did you replace with VW rated G12 coloant? Very Important! - You can't use over the counter coolant - it'll cause sludge in your system. You have to use G12...

disconnect the cooling fan temperature sensor on the engione that turns on the fan, if the fans runs the switch/sensor is defective.
