1998 Honda Accord stalls intermittently

My automatic car has died several times; once while driving 85 MPH on the freeway, once while coming to a stop and once when accelerating from a stop. All the lights on the dash come on; I put the car in neutral and restart easily and continue driving. I took it to the shop and they couldn't find the problem.

    SAME PROBLEM HERE

  • atl_shadygir Dec 02, 2008

I have this same problem. It dies going down the road on hwy 400, it dies at stop signs. I use to be able to place the key in the shift release and it would crank back up in neutral, but now it is doing nothing. Someone told me it may be a censor on the outside of the transmission, but as you I have found NO ONE to be able to solve the problem. Mine is a 1998 too. Please let me know if you find anything out.

I have the same problem, and my mechanic replaced the ignition switch but the car still dies.  My mechanic has gone over the car with a fine tooth comb and can't figure out the problem, he has checked EVERYTHING even the fuel pump which was on its way out so we thought replacing that would solve the problem

I have the same problem as well. Its died while idling, while driving 55 on the highway, and while driving 35 thru the city.

It will restart and drive ok but continues to die. I have a new baby I drive in my car and am worried that it will cause an accident.

I have a 1999 Honda Accord 4 cyl and it stalls out in traffic occassionally much like the other drivers described. It doesn't matter if I am driving along at 55 mph or accelerating from a start my car continues to stall. Any advice?

There was a recall related to this a few years ago. I know because my engine began shutting off on the interstate and other driving situations. You may be able to search for the recall or just take it in to a Honda dealership and tell them that you received a recall notice related to your ignition switch a while back and your car has been stalling out while driving. I believe a replacement of the ignition switch will fix your problem. I haven't had any problems since. The dealership shouldn't charge you anything for the repair.

It's the ignition switch if the dash lights go out.

I was having the exact same problem and the ignition switch was the solution. 99 Accord, 180k miles. The car would randomly and sporadically stall waiting at a red light, local speeds, highway speeds, etc. It would just cut off without warning, dash lights off, etc. Took it to the dealer who could not reproduce it at first, left it with them and thankfully they were able to reproduce it. The problem was the electrical part of ignition switch, which they had replaced about 10 years ago but they had replaced it with the exact same part. This time they replaced it with a different part, no charge and things have been perfect since then!

Change the MAIN RELAY underneath the steering wheel. It should only cost you $40+ rather than bringing it to the shop. I have the same problem with my Accord and its really dangerous. Let me know if this cures your prob.

Thanks

    Hi there,

How do you know that? I'm having the same issue as above and it seam to be only happening during the cold weather. Today is one of the first coldest days of the season and I stalled out... sometimes you see the idle RPMs dropping to almost 500 and jumping back up to 1000... When if stalls, the dash lights stay on and try to restart it. After a couple of minutes of cranking it eventually turns over and I'm good for about 2-3 weeks before it happens again. I'm more than willing to go out and buy a main relay and swap it out myself.

    Thanks!

Duplicate question.
I doubt the sensor would make the engine stop running. The computer would slow down the spark timing to prevent engine knock, but not shut it off.

2005 honda civic ex automatic stalled at 40 mph

Check the main fuses under the hood. There are several large ones there. A loose connection on one of them could have caused the sudden, complete electrical failure you described. If it is a loose connection, it would certainly explain why it "came back to life" by itself.

Also, might you possibly have any sort of aftermarket security system that has an immobilizer feature on it? While I wouldn't expect this to disable the entire car including the radio, if it were incorrectly installed I suppose it could.

I hope this help. Good luck!

Have you checked at the throttle linkage to make sure that all is ok? I have seen this problem, it is only a plastic clip that holds the throttle linkage in place and they brake and then no throttle.

Sounds like your IAC (idle air control) motor needs to be replaced. If you are driving on the Interstate/freeway/highway for a bit and then get off, the car dies when your coming to a stop right?
