The clanging started very low, but within the last 3 months is very noisy and the transmission seems like it is pulling. I smelled oil burning recently while driving.

First of all make sure you are checking the fluid right. Some people do not know that in order to check transmission fluid the engine needs to be running and the temperature needs to be sort of warm althought you should be able to get a good Idea just by the engine running. In this instance you might have a governer valve that isn't properly working to shift the engine when hydraulic pressure reaches a certain PSI. I would suggest having it flushed and put in new fluid and filter. If this doesn't work the problem is more serious and might need some professional assistance.

If the car has a kickdown cable check the adjustment.

yes power steering is most likely very low , repair leak , as the fluid is flameable

The clutchless shifting doesn't help your cause any. Has the fluid been changed yet? Start with fresh fluid and go from there.

how many miles on it,sounds like lifter noise which is normal for high mileage jeeps, but if you have over 140k it is not a good idea to run synthetic oils as they are thinner than conv oil and it might start to consume oil.
