Rav4 starting problems

On very cold mornings my Rav4 seems to start but then quits after about 10 seconds. It then fails to start. It only started about 2 hours later when it got a bit warmer. It has new battery and I pumped the fuel filter of excess water - any ideas?

I have the same problem on my 2008 rav4 (10 000 km). Although I use a block heater, the car start and shut down after few seconds. I use gaz line and wait and the car start. Another time, Three days ago, on a very cold morning, the car show the same problem and we make it tow at the toyota dealer. They put the car in the garage and start it few minutes later. The car start. The mechanics told me that he can see any computer code. He said that we fill it up with gaz with water. It's not good answer for me. We can't trust the vehicule when we want to start it at cold temperature. I live in a very cold area (Quebec province), so we're not proud of it. Hope we're not the only costumers with this problem. (PS excuse my english writing)

Have you run any tests, like does it have fuel pressure when it stalls out? how about trouble codes?

SOURCE: 2006 vw jettA 2.5....trouble starting

I had to take my car back to the dealership twice. First, they replaced the ignition switch. 3 days later, my car wouldn't start again. So I took it back and they called VW - VW said to replace the steering column module. I asked my dealer why they didn't replace the steering colum module first - they said that even if they had replaced that first, the old ignition switch would have shorted out the steering column module. Whatever.
$600 later my car has been fine for about 3 weeks now. If it happens again I will keep you posted.
Good luck!

it starts from cold because the auto choke is on ,allowing a richer mixture ,try removing the sender unit in the tank and seeing if the connection from the pump to the outlet connection is ok or leaking causing a loss of fuel pressure

SOURCE: Engine stalls while driving. Fuel deprivation?

I am having the exact same problem with my VW Touareg @60,000 miles. Two weeks ago and again today it sputters and stalls shortly after starting. I brought it into the shop and they could not reproduce the problem and said it was fine. Also, they had no ideas when I describes the problem. Anyone know what it going on? I am out of warranty.

Sounds like the fuel pump or a faulty connecting on the battery like corrosion or loose connection. It is unusual for a relay to go out like that. It could be a loose connector on the ignition switch itself so you'll want to check that as well, in fact start by checking that and if you have tapped the fuse block for an alarm or other add on type equipment check for a loose wire causing a short. This is especially true if you had a Starter kill switch installed as part of an Alarm system.

MY RAV4 engine stalls while slowing down. Whats the problem do you think?

well lets try inspecting your coolant temp sensor for the ecu, not for your gage it is green whit two wires going into it, if any corrosion replace sensor and pigtail, your ecu may be dumping lots of fuel thinking eng still cold when is hot, this also wahs off your rings and by adding oil bumps compression and starts, hope this helps.

Can anyone please tell me where the cam sensor and crankshaft sensor are located on a 2002 RAV4 2.0 D4D...116BHP Problem is wont start when engine is hot.

this a diesel. (our is 2.4Lgas(petrol)
cold starts fine, runs perfect cold RIGHT?
common rail system.

the PCM will tell you when those are bad, cranking for 5sec or running.
does your run,. ? if yes for get them. and scan engine PCM.
some sensor takes major work to reach.

get the FSM on that car. y
so get the FSM for your car, your engine and your country
The DI chapter covers this. read that yet? diagnosis?
did you use the scan tool an see what up's up or not ?

your engine really is.
1CD-FTV I4 (diesel)
that is the correct name, so study only that)

no start hot.
its too much fuel or tool little?
to little?
did you try test fuel to see if loss of fuel is the problem?
on diesel it's poor compression
or lost fuel , hot starts.
easy huh , no spark to check , there is no spark
some diesels have 1 sensor for injector timing.
if flooding , you get black smoke out the tail pipe, so id suspect
you'd have noticed that and did not see it.
test fuel, tests.
if this fails, a full hot compression test. its not the cam belt slippped
if runs ok cold,

i bet the injectors are shut down
the PCM tell you why, so let it.
SCAN it. after 5 seconds cranked.
almost all PCM report 1 bad pulse of 10 in all speed sensors.
(CKP or CMP )

No start cold

temp sensor failed. could be the air intake sensor... or the ecu temp sensor falling... easy to find out if intake sensor failing. before starting on a cold morning. or under 10 degrees.. unhook the air pipe and blow with your breath over the sensor put back and start engine. if engine starts fine then that's your problem.

Doesn t start

When you say the pump has been serviced, what do you mean ?
Usually when it fails to start cold, the fuel pressure is very low. And that is often because of a faulty check valve in the pump allowing fuel pressure to drain back into the tank.

Very hard to start in the morning.Has new battery, plugs and plugwires and engine turns over good but it takes 8-12 trys before it starts. After it does start if you touch the gas peddle it dies. After it...

Fuel injected? My 87 Porsche and 89 Alpha Romeo have Bosch fuel injection system (the best). They both have a cold start injector driven by the onboard computer. Computers hardly ever fail. But the sensor that tells the computer that the engine is cold can fail or the cold start injector can fail or be dirty. Please go to your autoparts store and get a repair manual, best $ 25 you will ever spend. Good Luck!
