Clearing Codes

Print

CONTINUOUS MEMORY CODES

These codes are retained in memory for 40 warm-up cycles. To clear the codes for the purposes of testing or confirming repair, perform the code reading procedure. When the fault codes begin to be displayed, de-activate the test by either disconnecting the jumper wire (meter, MIL or message center) or releasing the test button on the hand scanner. Stopping the test during code transmission will erase the Continuous Memory. Do not disconnect the negative battery cable to clear these codes; the Keep Alive memory will be cleared and a new code, 19, will be stored for loss of PCM power.

KEEP ALIVE MEMORY

The Keep Alive Memory (KAM) contains the adaptive factors used by the processor to compensate for component tolerances and wear. It should not be routinely cleared during diagnosis. If an emissions related part is replaced during repair, the KAM must be cleared. Failure to clear the KAM may cause severe driveability problems since the correction factor for the old component will be applied to the new component.
To clear the Keep Alive Memory, disconnect the negative battery cable for at least 5 minutes. After the memory is cleared and the battery reconnected, the vehicle must be driven at least 10 miles so that the processor may relearn the needed correction factors. The distance to be driven depends on the engine and vehicle, but all drives should include steady-throttle cruise on open roads. Certain driveability problems may be noted during the drive because the adaptive factors are not yet functioning

SOURCE: Code 224 on 1994 ford ranger. Checked primary

how did you check coils you can ohm them and they all should read the same... another way if you do not have an expensive scanner you can scope the current draw of each coil....or simply go to junk yard ...rob a set of coils and change all... do yourself a favor change plugs to standard autolite plugs.. let me know

Cant get fire to distribitor on a 1988 ford ranger could coil cause it

Assuming old-style setup (not sure when coil packs became standard), your task is to check that:
1. Battery power is on one lead of coil.
2. Other lead from coil is connected to points in distributor
3. Points do indeed connect and disconnect when engine turns
4. Condenser is ok (not shorted)
Check points gap when fully open. Bridge points when open and check for spark when you open that bridge connection.

Code 224 on 94 Ford Ranger will not go away. Replaced coils, plugs and wires.

Hi, you're probably going to have to replace the ignition module itself to clear that code. It is the part inside the distributor that's talking to the PCM.

FORD RANGER ENGINE PROBLEM

P0320 - Ignition Engine Speed Input Circuit Malfunction - The ignition engine speed sensor input signal to PCM is continuously monitored . P0320 indicates that two successive erratic profile ignition pickup ( PIP ) pulses have occurred Some possible causes are : loose wires / connectors , arching secondary ignition components ( coil , wires , + plugs ) , on board transmitter ( 2 - way radio )

My 94 Ranger 2.3L 4 cylinder would occasionally loose power when I was driving. Then it would start running fine again. It finally got a little worse, where I could stop when it was running rough so I...

If the hi-tension wires check out ok you may want to check on the distributor and the contacts at its end and in the inside. You may also want to test the ignition coil.

04 Ranger rough idle

I would check your crankshaft positing sensor this may be bad. I would also change your spark plugs and wires becuase they may have got water in them causing a short between them and the head. I would very carefully use air to clean the dirt from your engine compartment first. Autozone runs a free code check for you and this will tell you your problem. To clear your codes and to make the check engine light go off take off your battery cables and wait 30 minutes. You may also have a bad coil which will cause a misfire as well and a 306 error means a misfire to your 6th cylinder so it's probaly this. I hope this information helps.
