Question about 2001 Nissan Xterra

1 Answer

The brake and charging lights on the dash board are ON. Brake and brake fluid is okay. The battery was drained wehn i continued to drive for about 15Km. It was attented by one technician one month ago; he replaced the alternator by a used one. I then drove it for two weeks before resumption of the same lights. Now i can't buy another alternator unless am sure of the cause of the problem. Please help.

How can i be sure it is an alternator problem as the charging system involves a number of things like relays, fuses, wires/wiring, battery

Replacing with a new alternator was a perfect solution; however, new alternator is so far not a problem, the problem, ladies and gentlemen is....MONEY! The new one costs US$1300 whereas the used is US$200. So i went to see the BOSCH for advice. They repaired it at USD100. If this fails, i shall go for a loan to acquire a new one.

The comments provided by Hiseyj just assured me that there is no problem with wiring, fuses, relay.... So only the Alternator itself. Thanks a lot.

Now same car, consumes 7Km per litre. This is not normal for sure. It is 2000CC GT Gasoline engine with Auto transmission. I have gone through some forums on the web and find that it is supposed to drink 1 lt for 12Km. What might be a problem?

    Hi All,
I am driving X-Trail 2005 model, 2000cc, QR20 engine. I experience the alternator failure recently, knocking sounds when start and engage gear. I had consult with Nissan service center, surprisingly was informed this is common problem with X-trail! %*$@, I suppose this X-trail is one of the best SUV so far. My X-Trail is only 87000 km, 3.5years.
In Malaysia, a brand new alternator will costs RM1200 (USD320), OEM will cause 50% less. What to do, other than replace a new one:(

I replaced with the new alternator, seems working fine with charging but was forced to change the battery too because one cell was dead( was splashing). i am not sure if the installed battery size was correct because it was written N50 while the original one was N55. Now the new battery recharges quickly and discharges very quickly. Is the battery size a problem?

You drove for two weeks with the used alternator. It can't be a fuse, relay, wiring, etc. You need a new alternator. I have been doing this a long time and I have replace a lot of alternators. If you didn't mention the used alternator then I would say to check other things, but you had the used alternator installed and it worked for two weeks. Get a new one and it will work for a lot longer than two weeks. Don't buy a cheapy one either, you will be wasting your time and money, get the Nissan alternator.

Flashing battery light and brake light

Are you referring to warning lights on the dash board? The flashing battery light may mean you have a charging problem and the flashing brake light may mean you need break fluid or have an other brake issue. Take it to a service station or the dealer. Or read the owners manual.

I changed the battery, Battery ends and still the battery light and the brake light stays on???

If the battery light is on than there is a problem with the charging system, not the battery. With the vehicle running check the voltage at the battery. There should be around 14 volts if there is less tha. 13 volts than the charging system is not working. Have you checked the brake fluid level in the reservoir?

Emergency brake light stays on also battery light on

Assuming there is not a problem with the parking brake (as in a stuck switch), the red "BRAKE" light will remain on if your brake fluid is low (for your regular service brakes). Check your fluid, and if it is low, check your brakes and brake lines to be sure there isn't a leak somewhere, as this could be dangerous!

Brake fluid level will drop slightly as your brake pads/shoes wear over time. If you need brake pads or shoes, avoid topping the fluid off, as it will overflow when you go to compress the pistons in the calipers later on (when changing your brake pads). If you MUST add fluid, only add to the "FULL" mark. If you have a leak, remember the brakes must be bled after you repair the leak.

The battery light signifies a charging problem. You will need to check the output of your alternator, as in volts AND amps. Usually a local garage will be able to perform a quick (and cheap) check of your charging system. Check your battery too, to be sure that it holds a good charge.

My brake light and battery light stays on when driving. Also emergency brake does not work.

OK, the brake light is caused most likely by the emergency brake cable being broken, and the pedal or brake lever is not in position.

Also, the brake light could be caused by low brake fluid level. Check that, too.

Battery light, is caused by the charging system not working, like a bad alternator or shorted out battery, or both.

I would have these issues repaired before driving any distance.

Battery light and brake light were on, card wont

Nissan truns the brake and battery light on when there is a charging issue. When you say it wont start does that means it craks or no? If it does not crank I would attempt to charge the battery then try to start it and check the charging system.

1998 nissan altima break fluid and battery lite keeps coming on. also hear a belt slipping noise in the engine. only has 42,000 miles

possibly separate issues...there is a float in the brake reservoir that will detect low fluid..low fluid is usually a sign of wearing brake pads as the fluid displaces this wear and lowers the level in the reservoir. A slipping belt will cause battery charging issues as the alternators slips too much and wont chrage charging system diagnostic and ensure all belts/tensioners and alternator to be performing correctly...good luck

Brake and Battery light both just came on today.

Check the fluid level in the brake reservoir. The sensor in it may be detecting low fluid. This usually means you need a brake job since the rotors/pad/shoes have worn down.
The battery light may be caused by the alternator not charging. Check the drive belt - it could be loose. You can get the charging system check at Sears and some auto parts stores. Call around.
