Speedo stopped working last night. Stuck in first!
My question has 2 parts. Is my truck equipped with a 700r4 or a 4l60? And second will the speedo not working cause it to not shift? Truck has a tranny that has about 1800 miles since rebuild. Was working fine till the speedo stopped working!
Re: Speedo stopped working last night. Stuck in first!
Your Trans should be the 4L60. If your speedometer quits working and the truck won't shift out of 1st gear, the "Speed Sensor" is probably bad or the wiring is bad where it plugs into the sensor. The sensor will be towards the back of the trans or on the tail shaft. An easy way to test if the wiring is bad at the plug is to pull on the wire 3" or 4" from the plug and watch closely to see if it stretches. If there is any stretch the wire inside the plastic sheath is broken.

the speedometer on this car is worked via an electric signal
from the abs system,if the odometer trip has failed it will
require a new speedo head as the odometer is integral
part of the speedo.should be able to pick up a second hand
unit relativly cheaply.
The speedo not working causes these 3 lights to come on due to the speed of the car needed for the ABS ESP to work . Engine management light is on due to the first 2 lights . Happenned to me last night. Dont know what is up with your speedo . You have to reset the lights after speedo fixing as I am uncertain whether they will reset themselves.
If one speed sensor goes out, it will make your speedo stop working. I believe the sensors are about 200 a piece. You'll have to take it to the dealership to find out which one is malfunctioning as there are 5 of them total (I'm pretty sure). They only charged me 30 to put it in as it is really easy and that way it is warrantied by them. One other problem I had was with the electric brake controller on my truck went haywire and when I disconnected it, my speedo came back to life. Hope this helps!
the Speedo in your car is electronic, the problem is the tiny motor that moves the needle is most likely defective, there are no parts for the Speedoavailable to the consumer from Ford, you must remove the Speedo and have it repaired by a authorized Speedo repair shop. here is a link to a good one I know about. http://dnaspeedometers.com/
I used to calibrate police speedometers, The odometer by the way is the device that records how much distace you have travelled, The little numbers on the bottom of your speedo. If your speedo reads 100mph regardless of how fast you are travelling, The answer is simple you have some dirt jammed in your speedo. Check that your speedo is mechanical ie it has an armoured square ended cable that comes from the engine to the back of your speedo. Get your hand round the back of the dash and find the back of the speedo. See if you can feel an armoured cable going into the speedo, if so it will usually unscrew and let you pull the square drive inner out. This task is easier if you can first get the speedo out. It will have to come out. Then take the speedo apart without removing the pointer. A cup spins round a magnet and the pivots on the magnet sometimes get glued up. Clean with fine paint brush and parrafin. DO NOT TOUCH THE HAIRSPRING. Get diagram of dragcup speedo as it will show you all the parts. Hope this helps
