Yesterday, while driving my 99 Passat, it started to shake. I felt as though the car would stall, however it didn't. It didn't matter how slow/fast I was going. The engine light did not come on, there were no unusual odors, and the engine didn't sound unusual. The best description that I can give of the experience is what the car would feel like if you were trying to put it into 4th or 5th gear while only driving 15-20 mph.
That indeed is strange. It could be one of or a combination of things a number of things: a dying fuel pump, bad plugs or plug wires, a dirty fuel filter which needs replaced, carb problems, water in the gas. If you have really high mileage on the car, it could even be a bad clutch getting worse. Other than those admitted "guesses" I have no idea. If this has never happened before, I would give it a new fuel filter, put in a good additive like Sea Foam, make sure it is firing on all cylinders and take it from there. Good luck, bro . . .
SOURCE: check engine light on, car shakes while in reverse, stalls ...
it could be your mass air flow sensor? try checking that
bad ignition coil pack.easy to fix
SOURCE: engine shakes and hesitate when started until it idles down
Sounds like its missing on 1 or more cylinders. A check of the plugs and wires is in order, Could be a fouled plug or a loose/bad sparkplug wire. Best of luck.

Most likely if it happens at a specific speed it is that the tires need rotated and balanced or an alignment.
SOURCE: Shaking engine, weak power, blinking check engine light
You have a bad coil pack, they usually crack from age and heat. It's best to replace them all. Check for a VW recall on this item.
