Rear axle problem on 2004 outlander

Where the pro shaft connects to the rear axle the mounting has come loose and oil has sprayed over the underside of the car. The car is making horrible noises at low speed. Is the rear diff broken?

    What is a pro shaft? If you mean the U-joints at the end of the drive shaft, they need to be fixed ASAP.

Hi There,
I would try adding a lifter quiet supstance such as nulon lifter quiet, may or may not be available in your country, 
Or try heading to a local auto store and look for a reputable brand name products, ie injector clean/ carby clean /lifter quiet/worn engine treatment.
Below i have listed common problems related to yours that might be worth checking.
Sometimes the oil that you may of put in may not be thick enough hence why youre getting more noise.
it could mean yes that a lifter or shim is loose and needs adjustment,
injector noise from fuel injectors if they get clogged up they tick loudly.
Dirty fuel causing injector noise
Low oil or incorrect oil level as in over full.
Incorrect oil specification/ wrong Viscosity or grade.
Leak or low oil presssure could be a blockage somewhere stopping oil circulating
Worn oil pump not correctly pumping enough oil.
Oil line blockage insufficent oil getting up to the lifters
It coudl even be driveline related as in a C.V. joint coudl be loose/worn and ticking.
Ive even seen cars where wire has been entwined aroudn the driveshaft and taps against the floor/wall
Coudl be a fan if your fan runs off the engine rather then electric ticking against the houseing or it could also be a belt or bearing in one of you accesories ie a bearing in the aircondition clutch tha tmay be loose and is ticking.
However start small and go from the cheapest option up to the dearest.
Make sure you have a good listen while its running with the bonnet up and go through to try and find the source of the sound.
Usually this is what the mechanics would- do anyway untill they find the problem.
Hoipefully this helps so you dont have to take it to the shop.

I'm gonna tell you how to pull this drum off, ya ready?First off, get the rear of the vehicle up in the air safely, Then pull the rear tires off.After those are off then take a gander at the face of the drums, are there shiny brass looking screws installed on the face of that drum?Ifso remove those counterclockwise, then, take a hammer a shock the face off the drum firmly about three times.Now, go to the opposite side on the face of the drum and do that again, keep on doin that until you can wiggle the drum off by hand...easy as that, any other questions get back to me. I'M HERE TO HELP!!!

That is somewhat true. You can disconnect the driveshaft and index it(rotating it 180 degrees) and then reconnecting it. Then test drive-if the problem is gone then there you go. I cant promise that is it-but I have seen it on quite a few monteros.

Removal
  1. Remove the axle shaft; refer to Axle Shaft in this section.
Axle Shaft Removal

There is a clunking noise coming from the rear underside of my 2003 Mitsubishi Outlander.It is noisy when changing direction particularly when setting off from cold.It is less prominent when the car has...


You could have a worn rear strut which will need to be replaced. Also check some very minor things such as a loose muffler. And, a major ailment could be an extremely worn axle assembly or worn rear end assembly. Also check for things such as loose spring hangers as any small insignificant seeming part that is loose can cause rackets and odd noises and could run into catastrophic failure.

How do you change a wheel seal on a mercury mountaneer 1998 rear end


Axle Vent
NOTE: If the vent cannot be cleared, it must be installed new.
A plugged vent will cause excessive seal lip wear due to internal pressure buildup. If a leak occurs, check the vent. Make sure the vent hose is not kinked. Remove the hose from the vent nipple and clear the hose of any foreign material. While the hose is removed, pass a length of mechanics wire or a small diameter Allen wrench in and out of the vent to clean it. Connect the hose when done. The vent is located on the drivers side top of axle housing.
If you plan on doing most repairs yourself I would suggest buying a Haynes or Chilton manual for your particular vehicle. Or there are some data disks on e.bay($12-$15) For a cost of under $25, you can almost do any repair yourself with these manuals.Also there are online manuals like the site called ALLDATA where guides can be viewed for a fee. All these solutions will save you time and money, and give peace of mind over correct repairs. I can post you some procedures here also.

                                                            Rear axle leaking


                                                            Block the front tires. Break the rear lugs loose. Jack up the rear of the truck at the center if possible. remove the wheels & brake drums. Remove the brake shoes,return springs & all the other hardware. Remove the differential cover & drain oil. If you have a posi the next step sucks. You need to remove the threaded pin from the housing & remove the axle retaining clips. All the while,being carefull of the spring in the posi unit. If no posi,then same procedure,minus the "pucker factor". After the axle is out,take a large flat blade screw driver or pry bar & pop the seal out. Keep in mind the axle bearing is probably gone too , so that's another procedure. Keep it apart,you'll be glad you did.

Workshop Manual REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION Axle Shaft NOTE: Whenever replacing the rear axle lubricant, use Rear Axle Lubricant XY-90-QL (ESP-M2C154-A) or equivalent.
                                                            Removal

                                                            1. Raise vehicle to desired working height. Refer to Section 00-02 . Remove rear wheel (1007) and tire assembly. Remove rear disc brake calipers (2552) and rear disc brake rotors (2C026) .




                                                            1. Clean all dirt from area of axle housing cover with a wire brush and/or cloth.

                                                            1. Remove axle shaft from the rear axle housing , being careful not to damage the inner wheel bearing oil seal (1177) and rear brake anti-lock sensor ring.
                                                            Installation
                                                            NOTE: Check for presence of rear axle shaft o-ring (4A332) on the spline end of the shaft and install if not present.

                                                            1. Carefully slide axle shaft into rear axle housing without damaging rear wheel bearing (1225) or rear brake anti-lock sensor indicator (2C189) . Start splines into side gear and push firmly until the button end of axle shaft can be seen in the differential case .
                                                            1. Install the rear axle shaft retaining u-washer on the button end of the axle shaft splines, then pull the shaft outboard until the shaft splines engage and the rear axle shaft retaining u-washer seats in the counterbore of the differential side gear .
                                                            1. Position the differential pinion shaft through the differential case and differential pinion gears , aligning the hole in the differential pinion shaft with the lock bolt hole. Apply Rear Axle Lubricant to differential pinion shaft lock pin . Install differential pinion shaft lock pin and tighten to 20-41 Nm (15-30 lb-ft). sra~us~en~file=ani_caut.gif~gen~ref.gif CAUTION: Differential pinion shaft lock pin must be tightened to specification using Stud and Bearing Mount E0AZ-19554-BA (WSK-M2G349-A1) or equivalent.




                                                              NOTE: Axle housing cover must be installed within 15 minutes of application of the silicone rubber or new silicone rubber must be applied.

Inside of axle must be covered when cleaning the machined surface to prevent axle contamination. Tighten the cover bolts in a crosswise pattern to ensure uniform draw on axle housing cover .
                                                            1. Apply Silicone Rubber D6AZ-19562-AA or BA (ESB-M4G92-A or ESE-M4G195-A) or equivalent. Install axle housing cover and tighten retaining bolts to 28-38 Nm (38-52 lb-ft).



                                                            1. Add Motorcraft Rear Axle Lubricant XY-90-QL or KL (ESP-M2C154-A) or equivalent until it is 6-14mm (1/4-9/16 inch) below bottom of fill hole. Add 118.3 mL (4 oz) of Ford Additive Friction Modifier C8AZ-19B546-A (EST-M2C118-A) or equivalent to Traction-Lok axles. Install fill plug and tighten to 20-41 Nm (15-30 lb-ft).
                                                            1. Install rear brake anti-lock sensor indicator . Tighten retaining bolt to 4.5-6.8 Nm (40-60 lb-in).
                                                            1. Install rear disc brake caliper and rear disc brake rotor .
                                                            1. Install wheels and tires.

                                                            1. Insert Rear Bearing Remover T85L-1225-AH in bore and position it behind bearing so tangs on tool engage bearing outer race. Remove rear wheel bearing and inner wheel bearing oil seal as a unit, using Impact Slide Hammer T50T-100-A.

                                                            1. Lubricate the rear wheel bearing with Rear Axle Lubricant.



                                                            1. Install rear wheel bearing into the housing bore using Axle Tube Bearing Replacer T78P-1225-A.

                                                            1. Install the differential housing cover and fill the rear axle with the specified lubrication. For additional information, refer to Differential Housing Cover in this section.
                                                            1. Install the rear brake anti-lock sensor. For additional information, refer to Section 206-09A .
                                                            1. Install the rear brakes. For additional information, refer to Section 206-04 .
                                                            1. Install the tire and wheel assembly. For additional information, refer to Section 204-04 .
                                                            1. Lower the vehicle.

                                                            Rear axle berrings


                                                            Tools needed- typical socket and ratchet set, Axle slide hammer, Wiz Wheel type rotary cut off tool, chisel, ball pein hammer, hydraulic press, bech vice
                                                            First you must remove the rear wheels, then you must remove the brake capiler and mounting bracket, remove the brake rotor. unbolt 4 nuts on back side of brake dust shield that hold the seal and bearing securly in place. then you must attatch the slide hammer to the axle shaft by using the vehicles lug studs and lug nuts. use the slide hammer to knock the axle shaft out of the housing. it generally takes about 10-15 hard slams before it comes loose. once axle shaft is free to come out remove the slide hammer and pull the shaft from the axle tube. place the axle shaft into a vise and use the cut off wheel to cut off the bearing spacer. cut parralell to shaft until you hear a snap sound once it snaps use the hammer to slide the spacer off the end of the shaft. next you need to cut the bearing off the shaft using a the same technique being careful not the cut the shaft or the seal retainer plate. once the bearing is off then you can slide off the old axle seal. now slide on a new axle seal, axle bearing, and bearing spacer. take assembly to a hydraulic press and press the spacer and bearing onto the shaft until it seats squarely and make sure its all the way down onto the axle shaft. lubricate bearing with gear oil. and install shaft back into axle tube making sure that the recess in the seal retainer plate lines up with the abs sensor wire. tighten all nuts evenly top off gear oil
