Is the pumps running have you checked fuel comes out of it? if it does you will have to move on further along fuel line check next connection (fuel filter maybe) check there is stuff coming through there. Next goto other side of filter check there. Just go along the fuel line checking for fuel pressure. if there is fuel going all the way to the rail check the pressure regulator it may be stuck open therefore the gas would be getting pumped to the rail and going straight back to the tank i.e. no pressure.

It may BE losing fuel pressure, Robert. Check the fuel pressure and flow rate at the fuel rail. Filter, plugs, and cap have nothing to do with fuel pressure - your fuel pump and pressure regulator are the only things that can change fuel pressure very much.

A guy just told me that there is a internal fuel pump and a external fuel pump on my 1988 ford ranger xlt 2.9 4x4. is this true?

In some applications, yes there is two.

On the 2.3L and the 2.9L engines to model year 1988 the electric fuel pump system used on these EFI engines consisted of two fuel pumps: a low pressure boost pump mounted in the fuel tank, and a high pressure fuel pump mounted on the frame rail.
The low pressure electric fuel pump is located in the fuel tank and is a part of the fuel gauge sending unit.

Yes there are two (2) fuel pumps on these pickups, one low pressure one in the tank that gets the fuel to the high pressure pump which is in the inside of the drivers frame rail beneath the cab towards the front of the cab.

I have a 87 ford ranger and i put a fuel pump in the tank and drove about a mile and died.Has gas to the engine. will only run if sprayed down the throttle body. Its a 2.9, any thoughts on problem. Thank

there are 2 fuel pumps, a low pressure in the tank and a high pressure on the frame rail. the high pressure pump is probably bad. Check your relay and inertia/cut off switch first.

1994 ranger fuel problem

check your fuel pressure, also check to see if there is a booster pump, some ford rangers have a booster pump inline... fuel injected units need to have at least 35-45 psi some even higher around 50 psi...

Fuel Problem

fuel pressure regulator? This diverts excess pressure from the rail back to the tank. When they wear out they usually stay stuck open thus diverting all pressure back to the tank. Pressure tests do not reveal this as pressure is checked before the rail not in it. I do believe you have a bad fuel regulator. They are 75US ouch.
