Camry V6 09/1993 running rough - fuel filter?

Recently ran my 3L V6 Vienta Sedan very low on fuel. After filling she was running really rough. Seems to chug and cough & almost as though it will backfire. Ran a Fuel System cleaner through but hasn't fixed it. Could it be fuel filter and where is it and how do I change it? Or what else could it be?
Thanks,
JD (Australia)

Thank you, that seems to confirm what I thought. I can't find the filter location. Looked forward of the tank which is under the back seat. Anyone know where the fuel filter is? Is it in engine bay? Is it on top of the tank? Do I remove the tank to get to it? or the back seat?

Thks Bappa but my car has FUEL filter prob not oil - I do the oil OK myself. Also it is a 3L V6 not a 4 cyl. I just can't find the fuel filter at all???

Thks Jazzyboy. I only use High octane. I just need to know where the filter is located in my 1993 V6 3L Camry Vienta Auto sedan with ABS and right hand drive.

You suggested using "heet". What is it, never heard of it in Australia, what does it contain? I already ran "fuel system cleaner" made by Nulon.

I will try to remove & replace filter. Thanks frankster,

Hey ,,

Ok here is what has happend to you
You ran the tank low, now the dregs (rust particles) have stirred up in the tank and clogged the filter, thats whats causing the problem.
You can replace the filter, fill the tank right up, let it settle a cpl day and you will be fine once the tank dont go below half. To totally fix the problem you will have to take the tank down , have it washed and recoated, change the filter, and service the fuel intake to the engine.

To check if your tank has rust particles in it,
1.) remove the back seat of the car
2.) remove the tank covering and pop the gal lid
3.) remove the plate thats covering the fuel pump (in the back seat)
4.) remove the fuel pump by unscrewing it and disconnectinmg the hose.
5.) stick your hand in the tank from the space left by the fuel pump and feel the bottom you should feel rust particles.
6.) observe the fuel pump filter for signs of rust, then wash and replace the pump.
7.) re assemble everything.

Hope that helps.

BTW the fuel filter is by the engine, its between on the hose that leads driectly to the engine gas intake system. Just look for a hose on the engine that runs to a metal or plastic filter and then from the filter it leads to the fuel pump.

Air filter also caused the same problem, check it.

a detailed tunning may also solve the problem. but the tunning should be done by a qualified mechanic.

You will need to replace the fuel filter. You will find it mounted to the frame just ahead of the tank. Frankster016

You should not do it yourself as reaching it could mess something else up that will cause it to be permanently damaged. Make sure you did not change gas from higher octane to lower octane. This could cause it to drive rough. Switch to the highest octane gas and keep putting it in your car and stop using the fuel system cleaner and it should slowly begin to change back to normal.

The oil filter on Camery (4-cyl) is located in the lower front if the engine on the passenger rt side. It is accessable from below.

Take the Camry to the dealer to do the oil/filter change.

Thanks

I definately think it could be the fuel filter as the sediment/rust sitting in your tank could have been sucked up and into the filter.
On the location i cannot give you a exact location im sorry usually you will find them just infront of the rear wheels on either side.

You have to find the reason the check engine light is on. This will aid in diagnostics. Also, are you buying fuel at the same place both times?

I don't think the rough running had much to do with oil level, since it started running rough a 2nd time. Check the fuel filter and ignition timing.

My toyota vienta v6 just started to run rough i drove it around the back of my house this morning cold and it ran like **** it has 215 000km on the clock i went up a purchased 6 new platinum spark plugs...

Sound like you have some fuel problem, maybe or injectors are leaking or your fuel regulator is letting the fuel get too much pressure, this is fouling the plugs, and when you rev it, you clear them again. Make sure the fuel system has the right pressure. If you let it seat over night does it runs even worse? If yes, then your fuel injectors are leaking.

Try a fuel injector cleaner or higher octane fuel for a tank see if you notice a difference

Ran real low on gas

it sounds like you plugged your injecters put some STP gas treatment with injecter cleaner into the gas tank with at least a half a tank of gas and then finish filling it up and if this helps also replace the fuel filter

Make sure you don't have a faulty fuel injector, this may be the cause, also use a can of carb spray and spray around the intake gasket to check for leaks, if one is present you will notice a diff in the engine sound when the spray hits it.
